French composer and conductor Henri Tomasi (1901-1971) published Three Divertissements for Clarinet Quartet in 1964. As with his other wind compositions Three Divertissements was well-received by audiences. Tomasi was born in Marseille but his Father and Mother were originally from La Casinca in Corsica. Despite being pressured into musical studies by his parents Tomasi dreamed of becoming a sailor and during the summer he stayed with his Grandmother in Corsica where he learnt traditional Corsican songs. However in 1921 he began his studies at the Paris Conservatoire and went on to become ahigh profile composer and conductor. Tomasi did not forget his Corsican routes often incorporating themes of the songs he had learnt during the summers with his Grandmother into his compositions. The Three Divertissements are named; 1) Proceedings 2) Masquerade and 3) Rounds. This Tomasi piece is suitable to an advanced Clarinet Quartet providing an exciting alternative addition to the ensemble repertoire.

Melodic charm bel canto sensibility impressionist harmony à la Française and jazz rhythm influences unite in this quartet for three B-flat Clarinets and Bass Clarinet. Yellow Green was premiered on July 23rd 2013 at the Teatro Municipal de Niterói (Rio de Janeiro) by the musicians of the Omega Quartet: Maurício Silva Deusiel da Cunha de Souza Diego Abreu and Mateus Falkemback (bass clarinet).    Approximately 9 minutes in length the title – Yellow Green – is a tribute to the two colours of the Brazilian flag. The introduction gives way to a vast Fugue (marked Vivace)dipped in the colours of swing. The central Adagio floats a dreamy timeless melody. The brief finale brings together the fugue’s thematic material with one last recommendation for the performers: “Feel jazz”. This invigorating work was recorded for the Chant de Linos label by its dedicatees the Omega Quartet clarinetists.

Schwarz has produced an outstanding recording of these works with members of the Slovak Philharmonic, which is available on all streaming and download platforms. 1. THE AMADEUS WATCH: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart?s own watch ? if he had one ? ticks away. The ticking carries us back in time with a piece that stylistically imitates the music of the 18th century in melody, harmony and rhythm. 2. COMPOSERS DINNER IN HEAVEN: At the music publisher De Haske, a composers? dinner was an integral part of trade fairs or meetings. The dinner was very popular among anyone who sat at it, not least of all because it offered one the opportunity to chat informally.? Based on such a meeting, Otto M. Schwarz has a composed a work that describes an imaginary dinner of great classical masters on a cloud in the sky. Guess which composers are present by the references in the form of musical quotations and stylistic devices! 3. SCHERZO FOR CLARINET QUARTET: The work, in 12/8 time, moves in a rapid furioso. Underscored by a continues eighth note rhythm, the work creates in the listener the sensation of a frantic rollercoaster ride. The theme moves throughout all the parts and, following a chromatically moving chord sequence, ends in a dramatic crescendo.

Three Rags for Clarinet Quartet. Par JOPLIN SCOTT. Qui dit Scott Joplin, dit ragtime. Surnommé « le roi du ragtime », ce pianiste et compositeur américain (1868?1917) a écrit une bonne centaine de rags, parmi lesquels les célèbres « Maple Leaf Rag » et « The Entertainer ». Ce genre musical se reconnaît aisément : une mélodie syncopée accompagnée d?une ligne de basse régulière au rythme simple. Comme ces deux éléments sont en partie décalés et, parfois, se contrarient même, la musique swingue beaucoup. « Rag » signifiant « lambeau », le terme « ragtime » provient donc de cette impression de déchirement entre mélodie et ligne de basse. La plupart des rags sont écrits pour le piano. Ils ont joui d?une immense popularité au tournant des XIXe et XXe siècles, principalement grâce à Joplin lui-même. Après sa disparition, l?ère du ragtime en tant que courant dominant s?acheva. Les années 1970 ont connu un regain d?intérêt pour Scott Joplin, surtout grâce au succès cinématographique The Sting (L?Arnaque), dont la bande sonore comprend plusieurs de ses compositions, y compris « The Entertainer ». Solo and Chamber Works-Signs Games and Messages are series for solo instruments and small chamber ensembles. Each of the three notions refers to an essential factor in Kurtág's music. Signs ties in with the composer's period of study in Paris as a young man when he could not compose merely put graphic signs on the paper. (Additionally the word points to inspiration gained from the art of Klee and Michaux.) Games links with his nine-volume series for the piano with that title. Messages conveys the very personal content of these works in that these short pieces are actually diary notes and missives to musicians and friends important to Kurtág.The collection - like his earlierfive series for stringed instruments - does not form a coherent cycle. The pieces can be played individually or in various orders or among pieces from Signs Games and Messages written for other instruments.
