As the title suggests, it's a swinger with a hints of the classic Gene Krupa drum pattern. The tempo is around 200 BPM, lots of action for the trombones, written suggested solos for trumpet, tenor, trombone, and drums, a huge shout chorus, add great dynamics and well-notated rhythm parts too. Optional parts include vibes. It's big! (4:40).

Recorded by the Bob Mintzer Big Band on the album of the same name, this exciting tenor feature showcases several call-and-response conversations between the soloist and band. The drummer also shares some of the solo action -- the chart starts out with a 16-bar unaccompanied drum solo -- and brass ranges are reasonable. Duration 4:45.

As recorded by the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra in 1974 on their Live In Tokyo album, this straight-ahead blues features solo space for piano, three trombones, and drums. Since the drum solo is unaccompanied and precedes the final sustained band chord, Thad's score indicates that it can be extended if desired.

Absolutely one of the funkiest big band charts ever written. This Andy Clark arrangement of a great Don Sebesky original is loaded with appeal! Includes an open section for solos by any instrument and a drum solo section which climaxes with a terrific dogfight between the drums and the entire band! The ranges aren’t extreme, but it does require a solid trumpet section and a rhythm section that can play really funky to pull it off.

Let It Groove is all about the pocket! The feeling of the chart is reminiscent of Herbie Hancock's Watermelon Man or Lee Morgan's Sidewinder. The bass line is anchored to the bass drum pattern, and the enclosed rhythm exercises are an excellent tool for creating a cohesive rhythmic concept throughout the band. The solo section is a 12 bar Bb blues and can be opened up to include several soloists.
