Par VAN DER ROOST JAN. This stately concert opener was originally written by Jan Van der Roost for a special event in which six respected wind orchestras (two Belgian and four Dutch) of different composition (two symphonic bands, two fanfare bands and two brass bands) were featured during six concerts. Each evening brought forth a performance by a symphonic band, a fanfare, and brass band, so that the audience could experience all three types of ensembles. This was indeed an original concept. The name, ConZEnSus, comes from a combination of the words, ‘Concert Cyclus’ (concert series) and ‘zes’ (Dutch for ‘six’). This leads to a new word, which refers to ‘consensus’. The general tenor of the cycle isthus immediately indicated. The richness of color of the various ensembles is revealed through an open and friendly atmosphere. During all six concerts (over a span of three years), ConZEnSus functioned as a permanent opening number for each orchestra. Par VAN DER ROOST JAN. ‘Toccata Festiva’ was commissioned in 1994 by the Dutch Brass Band Championships. The wind band version was made a year later by the composer himself. Historically speaking, the toccata is considered to be one of the first independent instrumental forms for keyboard instruments. Originally the toccata was typically more or less improvised, later this musical form was given a more regulated structure. Both elements are used in the ‘Toccata Festiva’: on the one hand the different themes are developed freely, on the other, the piece has an orderly structure. It is in a three part form (quick-slow-quick) and includes both strong rhythmical figures and broad melodic lines. Partof the composition is written in a more or less archaic tone idiom, referring to the period from which the toccata form originates (16th century). / Niveau : 4 / Pièce de concert / Répertoire / Fanfare

Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme. Par BACH JOHANN SEBASTIAN. This enchanting melody is from the fourth movement of Bach’s Cantata 140 which was composed in 1731 using the parable of the wise and foolish virgins as the text. The work is beautiful in its simplicity with only three melodic lines, demonstrating Bach’s counterpoint at its best. For greatest effect it is suggested that the trumpets and trombones play behind the band or to the right and left of the stage. / Niveau : 3 / Musique pour célébration / Répertoire / Fanfare

Drei kurzweilige Impressionen. Par SCHAARS PETER KLEINE. Dans le cadre du projet “La musique de Kurt Weill”, organisé à Leeuwarden (Pays-Bas) en 2006, Peter Kleine Schaars a donné une seconde jeunesse à plusieurs oeuvres que le compositeur allemand avait créées pour le Dreigroschen Orchester (L’Orchestre de quat’sous), un ensemble qu’il avait spécialement formé et dont il avait fixé l’instrumentation pour interprété sa Kleine Dreigroschenmusik (Une petite musique de quat’sous) . Peter Kleine Schaars s’est inspiré des trois périodes qui ont marqué la vie de Kurt Weill (1900-1950) : ses étapes à Berlin, Paris et New York. Three Aspects of Kurt Weill (“Trois impressions divertissantes de Kurt Weill”) développe un thèmerécurrent exposé dans trois climats musicaux différents qui correspondent aux trois étapes de la vie de Weill. Le premier mouvement est une marche protestataire “aux accents berlinois” qui parodie l’utilisation de la musique sous le fascisme. Les trompettes ont le premier rôle. Le second mouvement chemine sur une valse musette toute parisienne qui fait la part belle au saxophone alto et à l’accordéon. Le troisième et dernier mouvement développe le thème dans une trame swing typique du Big Band. Impressions of a Village. Par DE HAAN JACOB. Bliss: Impressions of a Village contains three impressions of a village in the beautiful Brabant province in the Netherlands. The fi rst movement is in a very ‘classical style’ and, appropriately, captures the village’s history. Saxophones and a glockenspiel follow the path of a small, playful river. The entire band join in as the small river approaches an ancient castle. Based on Mohrentanz (La Mourisque) by Tylman Susato. Par DE HAAN JAN. Tylman Susato (circa 1500-1561) was one of the worlds first music publishers and seller of musical instruments. He left behind several collections containing arrangements of Dutch songs and dance and also published several of his own works. Three of these, published in 1551, were called Musyck Boexken, or music book.
