On the day she was born in 2000 Heath was walking over the meadows in Edinburgh to see her and could hear bagpipes playing in the distance. That inspired him to write this piece.The melody and over-all style are influenced by Scottish traditional music however the harmonies come from modern jazz.

After the success of Carpe Diem! a Clarinet Concerto written in 1990 Kaipainen went on to write his Oboe Concerto in 1994. Carpe diem! exemplifies the increasingly Classical ideals espoused by Kaipainen over the years. He develops this strand even further in his 'Oboe Concerto' which is a much more restrained and balanced work in darker tones.The piece contains three movements the first of which combines elements of a traditional opening movement and scherzo. The slow movement is an affecting elegy. The finale consists mostly of quietly played perpetuum mobile figures interspersed with sudden dramatic passages.

Written in 1991 the score was reworked by the composer for the Festival d’Auvers-sur-Oise where the new version premiered in June 2010. The origin of this work goes back to For Aldeburgh 85. Written for the 75th birthday of singer Peter Pears the piece takes up a fragment of Peter Grimes whose leading role had been written by Britten for the beloved tenor. Dutilleux adds a page titled FromJanequin to Jehan Alain in which appears a song from the Renaissance composer “L’espoir que j’ay d’acquerir vostre grace” used by J. Alain in his Variations for Organ on a theme by Clément Janequin. The junction between the two parties is made through an Interlude that introduces the “wolf’s moan” theme from the ballet Le Loup (The Wolf) composed by Dutilleux in 1953 for the troupe of Roland Petit. This subtle tangle of quotations forms a shimmering and sensual work where the uniqueness of an authentic artist powerfully asserts itself.

Yuri Maizels was born in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) in the former Soviet Union. After the conclusion of the Second World War he was accepted at age 13 into the Naval Boarding Musical School in Leningrad (the school which had been organized in 1873 by Rimsky-Korsakov) to study the oboe. In 1964 he graduated from the College of Music with multiple degrees in oboe performance oboe teaching and conducting. During his career Yuri Maizels played in major orchestras working with such well-known conductors such as Yuri Temirkanov Mariss Jansons Yuri Simionov Valery Gergiev and others.

Volume 3-French oboist Louis Bleuzet (1874-1941) studied at the Paris Conservatoire where he won first prize for Oboe. Being a virtuoso of the instrument himself his The Technique of the Oboe is very well-informed. Bleuzet's career saw him become soloist at the Paris Opera as well as a professor of the Oboe at the Paris Conservatoire. Published in 1937 The Technique of the Oboe was compiled by the composer toward the end of his life. The third volume gives focus to arpeggios and staccato within a variety of rhythms time signatures intervals and other aspects. With detailed instruction in English Frenchand German this Bleuzet study book is highly versatile and essential to the progression of all oboist's technique.
