Written by Gabriel Yared, composer to the scores for The English Patient, Cold Mountain and The Talented Mr Ripley, this folio of 22 original Cello pieces has been designed to inspire and encourage duettists, especially teacher/pupil collaborations.The idea grew out of composer Gabriel Yared's own learning experience which suggested a need for one part to be written for the experienced teacher and another for the developing novice.The duets themselves progress from beginner to advanced levels, gradually addressing new technical problems as they go as well as providing varied and stimulating music to play.The accompanying CD includes a full recording of each duet as well as two alternative playalong versions each giving prominence to one part or the other.The publication comes with individual parts, completing a package that was developed, composed and produced as a completely original way of learning cello duets. / 2 Violoncelles

Béla Bartók composed his 44 Violin Duos in 1931, at the urging of the German violin pedagogue Erich Doflein. With two exceptions, all the pieces are based on original folk music themes, most of which the composer himself collected in the course of his numerous collecting trips to the Carpathian Basin and in Algeria. Although conceived as parts of a pedagogically motivated set, these little pieces are highly effective in concert performance as well. The transcription follows Bartóks original faithfully. In 1839 Friedrich August Kummer (1797-1879) wrote Violoncelloschule f³r den ersten Unterricht (Violoncello School for Preliminary Instruction), Op. 60. The method has remained a staple of teaching literature ever since. As an appendix to this work, Kummer composed several duets of increasing difficulty that can be paired with the topics and exercises learned in the lessons. As cello technique changed during the nineteenth century, several cellists (Friedrich Dotzauer, Bernhard Romberg, and Leo Schulty) added other duets bringing the total to 110. Selected Pupil/Teacher Cello Duets contains the first 85 collected in the 1900 Schirmer edition of these etudes, extracted to be used in lessons to enforce technical and musical issues as they arise. / 2 Violoncelles
