Nicola Mestrino (1748-1789) was employed for a time in the Esterházy court orchestra under the direction of Joseph Haydn. He later settled in Paris and became one of the most celebrated violin virtuosos of the period. He was also a composer, and one of his most successful works was this set of three violin duets which was published in no fewer than four contemporary editions in Paris, Vienna, Amsterdam and the German city of Offenbach. In these duets consisting of either three or two movements, the two violins have absolutely equal roles.

Später zog er nach Paris und wurde einer der bekanntesten Geigenvirtuosen seiner Epoche. Daneben komponierte er auch, eines seiner erfolgreichsten Werke sind die drei Violinduette, die damals nicht weniger als vier Ausgaben in Paris, Wien, Amsterdam und Offenbach (D) erlebten. Diese vier Ausgaben bilden die Quellen der Edition im neuesten Band der URTEXT-Serie, die von István Kertész, dem ersten Geiger des weltbekannten Festetics-Streichquartetts, gefertigt wurde. In den zwei- und dreisätzigen Duette haben die beiden Violinen vollkommen gleichberechtigte Rolleninne.

Iberian Refractions was written in response to a piece of Old Hispanic medieval chant, which gradually works its way into the music movement by movement. The chant melody infiltrates all aspects of the work’s foreground melodic structure, its harmonic backbone and its core inner detail, intensifying as the piece unfolds.

Composer and violinist János Lavotta (1764-1820), as a member of the ''virtuoso trio'' who played a great role in the history of Hungarian music, was one of the pioneers of verbunkos music. (The other two key players being János Bihari and Antal Csermák.) Although Lavotta s Violin Duos Op. 49 must have also been used for playing music at home, they show the composer's clear educational intent since the fourteen consecutive pieces gradually increase in difficulty in both technical and musical respects. The relatively short and undemanding melodies (which can be grasped by beginners), the sequence-like structure that makes practising individual technical elements possible, therhythmical-harmonic accompanying forms, as well as the temperately applied modulations are definitely suitable for beginner violinists to achieve significant progress in playing. According to music historian Mária Domokos, Lavotta's duos could have been included in the syllabus of any contemporary music school at the time. The first publication of Easy Duos - which came out on the 250th anniversary of the Lavotta's birth - was edited by János Dombóvári who provided the fingering and the necessary instructions for performance.

One of EMB s most successful composers and publishers, And-rás Soós, has devoted his latest volume to a special instrumental ensemble: three violins. No original works appear in it, in this collection, which aims at variety, we find transcriptions of choral works and piano and guitar pieces, etc. from the 14th to the 19th century. The main consideration in selecting the works was that the score should offer young violinists real chamber music, that is, if possible three equally important parts should share in the music-making.
