Gastoldi (environ 1550-1622) a travaillé comme sous-diacre, chanteur et maître de chapelle à l'église la maison de la famille Gonzaga, S.Barbara à Mantoue, et plus tard à Milan. En dehors de compositions religieuses, il a aussi écrit deux recueils de danses qui ont fait Gastoldi connue dans toute l'Europe. Jusqu'à la première moitié du 17ème siècle, les deux collections, l'Balletti 5-partie et les 3-pièces, ont été réimprimés à plusieurs reprises. Danses Gastoldi étaient très populaires dans toute l'Europe comme la musique d'utilité. Avec leurs mélodies accrocheuses et de la jouabilité facile, ils sont bien adaptés, aujourd'hui encore, pour compléter le répertoire des ensembles enregistreur petits ou grands.
