A Midwest Fanfare was commissioned by the Brass Band of Battle Creek and premiered by them during their appearance at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago on 20th December 2017 where this fanfare was the opening piece of the entire event. This piece is designed to be played with the cornets split into two teams either side of the band. It opens with the two groups answering each other antiphonally over a repeated figure in the lower band. A calmer central section introduces a euphonium solo which is then taken up by the whole ensemble. This leads back to a repeat of the opening fanfares over a rhythmic accompaniment and a short coda which brings the work to a close.A Midwest Fanfare werd geschreven in opdracht van de Brass Band of Battle Creek en op 20 december 2017 door dit ensemble in première gebracht als openingswerk op de Midwest Clinic in Chicago. Het werk is zo gecomponeerd dat de kornetten in twee teams worden verdeeld, die aan weerszijden van de band komen te staan. Deze twee groepen antwoorden elkaar op antifonale wijze boven een herhaald motief in de lagere registers. Een rustiger centraal gedeelte introduceert een eufoniumsolo, die aansluitend wordt overgenomen door de complete band. Deze passage mondt uit in een herhaling van de openingsfanfares boven een ritmische begeleiding, waarna het werk met een korte coda fraaiwordt afgesloten. A Midwest Fanfare wurde von der Brass Band of Battle Creek in Auftrag gegeben und bei ihrem Auftritt anlässlich der Midwest Clinic in Chicago am 20. Dezember 2017 uraufgeführt, wo diese Fanfare den Auftakt für die gesamte Veranstaltung bildete. Das Stück ist so konzipiert, dass die Kornette in zwei Gruppen aufgeteilt sind und auf beiden Seiten der Brass Band platziert werden. Es beginnt mit einem Wechselgesang der beiden Gruppen, der über einer sich wiederholenden Melodie in den tieferen Stimmen der Brass Band erklingt. Im ruhigeren Mittelteil wird ein Euphonium-Solo vorgestellt, das dann vom gesamten Ensemble aufgenommen wird. Schließlich kehren die Eröffnungsfanfarenüber einer rhythmischen Begleitung zurück und eine kurze Coda bringt das Werk zum Abschluss. A Midwest Fanfare est une commande du Brass Band de Battle Creek, qui l’a créée le 20 décembre 2017 lors d’un concert dans le cadre de la Midwest Clinic, Chicago, où elle a été choisie comme fanfare d’ouverture. L’instrumentation divise les cornets en deux groupes de part et d’autre de l’orchestre. La pièce s’ouvre avec les deux groupes qui se répondent antiphonalement sur un motif répété par les basses. Un passage central plus calme introduit un solo d’euphonium qui est ensuite repris par l’orchestre entier. La fanfare du début revient alors sur un accompagnement rythmique avant une brève coda qui achève la pièce.

This stately concert opener was originally written by Jan Van der Roost for a special event in which six respected wind orchestras (two Belgian and four Dutch) of different composition (two symphonic bands, two fanfare bands and two brass bands) were featured during six concerts. Each evening brought forth a performance by a symphonic band, a fanfare, and brass band, so that the audience could experience all three types of ensembles. This was indeed an original concept.The name, ConZEnSus, comes from a combination of the words, ‘Concert Cyclus’ (concert series) and ‘zes’ (Dutch for ‘six’). This leads to a new word, which refers to ‘consensus’. The general tenor of the cycle isthus immediately indicated. The richness of color of the various ensembles is revealed through an open and friendly atmosphere. During all six concerts (over a span of three years), ConZEnSus functioned as a permanent opening number for each orchestra. Thus the same musical story was portrayed in three different packages.

The opening of this three-movement work features an initial appearance of the thematic material that returns in various guises later on in the work. The leitmotiv centres on a minor second. A range of thematic variations is heard in the lively and energetic Metamorphosis One. This movement is interrupted by an atmospheric meno mosso, containing melodic passages that return to the opening theme.Metamorhosis Two is characterised by various changes in tempo and musical character. Seven different soloists transform the thematic material each in their own way. This eventually culminates in a passionate tutti passage.The source of inspiration for Metamorphosis Three is the so-called BACH-motif, a musical autograph consisting of the notes B flat, A, C and B. This distinctive motif arises from the leitmotiv (here a descending minor second), which continuesto evolve through various transpositions and transformations. For the composer, this spectacular last movement is an homage to one of the greatest and most influential composers in the history of music: Johann Sebastian Bach.An impressive contest piece commissioned by Brass Band Schoonhoven, performed at the 2014 European Brass Band Championships.
In de opening van deze driedelige compositie wordt het thematische materiaal gepresenteerd dat verderop in het werk in allerlei transformaties voorkomt. De ‘kleine secunde’ dient daarbij als leidmotief. In het levendige en flitsende Metamorphosis One wordt volop gevarieerd met de thematiek. Het deel wordt onderbroken door een sfeervol meno mosso met daarin melodische passages die teruggrijpen op het beginthema.In Metamorhosis Two treden veel veranderingen op in het tempo en het muzikale karakter. Zeven verschillende solisten transformeren ieder op hun eigen wijze het thematische materiaal. Uiteindelijk resulteert dat in een gepassioneerd, tuttigespeeld gedeelte.De inspiratiebron voor Metamorphosis Three is het zogenaamde BACH-motief, een muzikale handtekening met de noten Bes, A, C en B. Dit karakteristieke motief ontstaat vanuit het leidmotief (in dit geval een dalende kleine secunde) en verandert voortdurend van gedaante door allerlei transposities en omvormingen. De componist beschouwt dit spectaculaire laatste deel als een eerbetoon aan een van de grootste en invloedrijkste componisten uit de geschiedenis van de muziek: Johann SebastianBach.In der Eröffnung dieses dreisätzigen Werkes wird zum ersten Mal das thematische Material präsentiert, das im weiteren Verlauf in diversen Gewändern wiederkehrt. Das Ganze steigert sich schließlich zu einemfulminanten Tutti.Quelle der Inspiration für Metamorphosis Three ist das so genannte BACH-Motiv, eine musikalische Signatur aus den Tönen B, A, C und H. Dieses ausgeprägte Motiv geht aus dem Leitmotiv hervor (hier ist es eine absteigende kleine Sekunde),welches fortwährend durch verschiedene Transpositionen und Transformationen weiterentwickelt wird. Für den Komponisten ist dieser spektakuläre letzte Satz eine Hommage an einen der größten und einflussreichsten Komponisten der Musikgeschichte: JohannSebastian Bach.Le titre Metamorphosis décrit une transformation musicale – autrement dit, le processus qui commence avec nos origines (Initium), puis progresse à travers l’évolution du corps et de l’ me (Corpus, Animus) et enfin, gr ceà l’expérience de la vie (Virtus, Invidia), se développe en une personnalité adulte (Estasi).Les musiciens connaîtront des états d’esprit changeants, entretenant la conscience de ce qui a été et de ce qui sera (le présent et l’avenir) tout en jouant. Les passages d’improvisation ont été délibérément laissés vierges –sans notation – afin de permettre à l’instrumentiste d’évoluer sans contraintes dans ce style musical et de laisser libre cours à son imagination.

Sparkling Brass was commissioned by Osaka Concert Brass, one of Japan’s top brass bands, and premiered by them on 27th December 2018 during a concert which celebrated their 10th Anniversary. The work opens in lively mood with fanfare-style figures from the lower band which are answered by the cornets. This interplay intensifies until the mood calms suddenly to introduce a chorale which leads to a duet-cadenza for cornet and euphonium. The rhythmic mood of the opening soon returns and leads to the main theme of the work, a modal caccia which features various section of the band. A short bridge passage leads to a change of key and a new cantabile theme which isintroduced by euphoniums and baritone. This is taken up by the full band after another change of key and leads back to the caccia theme. A transformed version of the opening fanfare returns to close the work. Sparkling Brass werd geschreven in opdracht van Osaka Concert Brass voor een concert ter gelegenheid van het tienjarig bestaan van die band. Het werk opent in een levendige sfeer, met fanfareachtige motieven in het lage koper, beantwoord door de kornetten. Dit samenspel wordt intenser tot de sfeer plotseling rustiger wordt en er een koraal naar voren komt dat leidt naar een duet-cadens voor kornet en eufonium. De ritmische sfeer van het begin keert snel terug en mondt uit in het hoofdthema, een modale caccia met diverse secties uit de band. Een korte bridgepassage brengt een verandering in toonsoort en een nieuw cantabile thema, ge ntroduceerd door de eufoniumsen bariton. Dit wordt overgenomen door de hele band na nog een toonsoortverandering, waarna het caccia-thema terugkeert. Het werk besluit met een getransformeerde versie van de openingsfanfare. Das Werk beginnt lebhaft mit Fanfarenfiguren in den tieferen Stimmen, die von den Kornetten beantwortet werden. Dieses Wechselspiel wird intensiver, bis sich die Stimmung plötzlich beruhigt und ein Choral erklingt, der in eine Duo-Kadenz für Kornett und Euphonium mündet. Eine kurze Überleitung führt zu einemTonartwechsel und einem neuen Cantabile-Thema, das von den Euphonien und Baritonen eingeleitet wird. Nach einem weiteren Tonartwechsel wird es von der gesamten Brass Band übernommen und führt wieder zum Caccia-Thema zurück. Zum Schluss des Werkes erklingt noch einmal eine veränderte Version der Eröffnungsfanfare. L’ambiance rythmée du début revient bientôt et mène au thème principal de la pièce, une caccia modale qui met en avant divers pupitres de l’orchestre. Un bref passage de transition mène un changement de tonalité et un nouveau thème cantabile introduit parles euphoniums et le baryton. Ce thème est repris par l’orchestre entier après un autre changement de tonalité pour revenir au thème en caccia. L’œuvre se termine par une version transformée de la fanfare du début.

This new original composition by the Japanese composer Itaru Sakai for ten-part brass ensemble is characterised by two main ideas: a fanfare section, deriving from a literal quotation from the opening of Mahlerâ??s fifth symphony, and a contrasting,wandering theme thatâ??s rather melancholy.A BOUNDARY ISLAND is geschreven voor het Brass Ensemble Rose en het RivST Brass Quintet. De première vond op 13 april 2010 plaats in de Rose Hall in het Japanse Toyonaka Osaka, tijdens een concert waarin beide blazersensemblesoptraden. De componistwilde met dit werk het karakter van de muziek als universele taal uitdrukken - een taal waarin mensen uit alle delen van de wereld met elkaar kunnen communiceren.Aan het begin van de compositie worden tweethemaâ??s ge ntroduceerd: het eerste, in fanfareachtige stijl, is ge nspireerd op een citaat uit de opening van Mahlers vijfde symfonie. Het staat in contrast met het tweede, eerder melancholische thema.Het levendige hoofddeel heeftzijn eigen krachtige thema, maar grijpt ook terug op de twee openingsthemaâ??s, die daarbij in een nieuw jasje worden gestoken. Zu Beginn des Stückes werden zwei Themen vorgestellt: Das erste, fanfarenartige Thema, das aus einem Zitat vom Beginn von Mahlers SINFONIE NR. 5 entwickelt wurde, steht im Kontrast zum zweiten, eher melancholischen Thema. Der bewegte Hauptteilpräsentiert ein eigenes, kraftvolles Hauptthema, bezieht aber auch beide Einleitungsthemen wieder mit ein und rückt diese teilweise in ein neues Licht. Nach einem kurzen Einschub im langsamen Eingangstempo folgt ein stretta-artiger Schluss.Dans A BOUNDARY ISLAND, le compositeur souhaitait exprimer le caractère universel de la musique en tant que langage qui permet tout le monde de communiquer.Deux thèmes sont présentés au début de la pièce : le premier, dans un style de fanfare, rappelle un passage de lâ??introduction de la 5e symphonie de Mahler. Il contraste avec le deuxième motif, plus mélancolique. La section principale, très animée,introduit une nouvelle trame puissante tout en reprenant les premières thèmes en les traitant différemment. Après un bref retour au tempo plus lent de lâ??introduction, la pièce sâ??achève sur un rythme rapide.
