Juchés sur d?impressionnants pitons de grès calcaire les monastères des Météores situés au nord de la Grèce continentale offrent une vue fascinante sur la vallée draînée par le fleuve Pinios.Les rochers des Météores ont poussé les premiers ermites à occuper le lieu dès le IXe siècle. Au XIe siècle des moines chassés de leurs temples s?installèrent sur ?les colonnes du ciel? mais ce n?est qu?au XIVe siècle que les premiers monastères furent construits. La vie monastique fut florissante au cours des siècles qui suivirent. Plus de vingt monastères furent érigés et une communauté monastique autonome s?y établit. Jusqu?au milieu du XVIIIe siècle les monastères des Météoresservirent de centres d?éducation de lettres et d?art.Sur les vingt-quatre monastères initiaux seuls six sont encore en activité actuellement dont quatre sont ouverts au public. En raison de l?amélioration des infrastructures et de la forte affluence touristique peu de jeunes moines souhaitent s?y établir. La plupart trouvent refuge dans le silence des monastères du mont Athos inaccessibles aux touristes.Kevin Houben s?est inspiré de ces lieux pour composer Valley of the Pinios (La vallée du Pinios) une œuvre de commande pour le Brass Band de Retie en Belgique. On y entend presque le vent tourbillonner autour des rochers de craie. Il émane une atmosphère sacrée des monastères des prières et de la solitude? La vallée majestueuse révèle toute la splendeur de la nature.

Originally written for female voices, the composer later created a version for full choir on which this arrangement is based. It has a gentle meditation with the two soloists drifting across the soft band accompaniment, alternately echoing and imitating each other or joining together in thirds. The effect is quietly ecstatic, a brief moment of adoration and wonderment. This arrangement can be played with either two cornets or two euphoniums as soloists as the accompaniment works just as effectively with either. (The Four Seasons)-Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741) stands with Handel and J.S. Bach as one of the titanic figures of late Baroque composition. Not only was he lauded as a composer of vocal and instrumental works both sacred and secular he was without doubt the most prolific composer of his age. In addition to hundreds of vocal works including forty-nine operas he composed five hundred concertos. The Four Seasons are probably the best known of his concerti with the second movement Largo portraying time spent by a roaring fire listening to the rain pounding against the window. This new arrangement for brass band retains all the warmth of the original.
