Fantasy on the canon Freu' dich des Lebens. Par SPARKE PHILIP. Partitions pour Choeur à quatre voix (SATB) - 25 ex. L’année 2008 marque le 400e anniversaire de la fondation de la ville de Québec (1608-2008) au Canada. Pour célébrer cet événement, la Musique des Voltigeurs de Québec, une unité d’infanterie de la force terrestre des Forces canadiennes, a fait appel au compositeur Philip Sparke pour l’écriture de deux oeuvres de concert (disponibles sur un compact disc édité spécialement pour cette occasion). Philip Sparke a composé Sounds of the Saint Lawrence (Échos du Saint-Laurent), une suite de chants traditionnels québécois, et cette fantaisie libre sur le canon Freu’ dich des Lebens de Ludwig van Beethoven. L’histoire de ce canon est absolument fascinante. En 1822, Théodore Frédéric Molt, un professeur, auteur, pianiste et organiste allemand - ancien soldat dans l'armée napoléonienne ayant combattu à Waterloo - arrive à Québec. En 1825, il retourne en Europe afin de parfaire sa formation. Au cours de son séjour, il rend visite à Beethoven. Quelques jours plus tard, il fait parvenir une lettre au compositeur sourd en incluant une feuille blanche sur laquelle il lui demande d'écrire « du fond de son grand coeur » un souvenir « qui restera pour moi, à une distance qu'il me faudra presque 3000 heures pour parcourir, un document éternellement précieux. »Beethoven accepte et, le 16 décembre 1825 (jour de ses cinquante-cinq ans), il présente à Théodore Molt le canon Freu’ dich des Lebens Le manuscrit est actuellement conservé dans une collection canadienne. Beethoven’s Greeting (“La signature de Beethoven”) débute avec une introduction lente basée sur le canon. S’ensuit un Vivo qui sera repris ultérieurement sous la forme d’un déchant à la mélodie du canon. Requiem canticorum is a five-movement work of 12 - 14 minutes’ duration. Its title means 'a Requiem of song' or 'a Requiem of canticles' indicating that it is a commemorative piece which sets texts associated with theRequiem mass rather than being a full Requiem. It is scored for choir soprano saxophone and organ a scoring it shares with the 'Son of God Mass' by the same composer.It can be performed as a concert piece or as afree-standing anthem within the context of a commemorative event or liturgy.‘Requiem canticorum’ can also be performed in conjunction with selected movements from the ‘Son of God Mass’ to make a full concert Requiem. Having previously set two sections of it as separate a cappella choruses andone for two countertenors and strings I've long wanted to make a complete setting of the work and by arranging the countertenor piece for a cappella chorus and setting the remaining verses as two more anthems for the sameforces I've completed the task. The five pieces can of course still be performed separately or brought together as a twenty-five minute setting of Roy Campbell's translation from the original Spanish of this vivid and intensepoem.'Geoffrey Burgon May 2008

I decided to write a kind of latter-day equivalent to the Bachcantatas with two soloists (soprano and baritone). The texts are derived from a variety of Psalm sources: some in Latin some in English a meditation by Savonarola and a Henry Vaughan poem.' - John McCabe

Christmas Cantata (Sinfonia Sacra) the most famous piece by Daniel Pinkham composed in 1957 is a church composition for Chorus Double Brass and Organ. Written in Latin this version of the piece contains the Chorus score (SATB) with the Organ reduction. Accessible to good high-school and college singers the opening statement is sung by the whole SATB followed by the rhythmically complex Allegro section. The middle section is sung by Sopranos and Altos while the Rondo which is part of the final part is sung by the whole SATB its verses being interpreted by the different groups. Daniel Pinkham (1923-2006) is anAmerican composer organist and harpsichordist. Most of his compositions were related to church music and his best known works are the Christmas Advent and Wedding Cantatas.
