Russian composer César Cui (1835-1918) was a member of 'The Five' a group of Russian composers dedicated to the production of a specifically Russian type of music. His 1916 composition for Flute and Piano Scherzetto also incorporates Russian characteristics. Cui composed for all genres however his style was often compared to Robert Schumann or Charles Gounod rather than his Russian contemporaries such as Mikhali Glinka. Whilst retaining nationalistic characteristics Scherzetto makes use of a variety of musical features including differing articulation chromaticism wide leaps and scalicpassages. For all intermediate flautists Cui's Scherzetto provides an exciting chirpy and varied addition to the repertoire.

Composed in 1979 Goldfish Through Summer Rain is a piece for flute and piano by Australian composer Anne Boyd. Boyd studied music at the University of Sydney where she was one of Peter Sculthorpes first students. Her music is regularly performed world-wide. The hallmarks of her musical style are its transparency gentleness and delicacy – attributes whichreflect her long involvement with Asian traditions especially those of Japan and Indonesia.

In a letter dating from 1777 Mozart reported to his father from Mannheim that Johann Baptist Wendling principal Flautist of the famous Mannheim Orchestra had been approached by a wealthy Dutch businessman by the name of De Jean who was prepared to pay 200 gulden for three easy flute concertos and four flute quartets for his own use. Mozart accepted the commission. By the day before the Dutchman left Mozart had delivered only three of the quartets andtwo concertos for which he had been paid 964 gulden. The composer who was himself being pressed by his father to continue his own journey to Paris with his mother was full of excuses writing back to Salzburg on 14 February 'It is not surprising I have been unable to finish them for I never have a single hour's quiet here...Moreover you know I become quite powerless when I am obliged to write for an instrument I can't stand.' There is more than a hint of disingenuousness in Mozart's words for this was the height of the period during which he was being distracted from his work by his new-found love for the Mannheim singer Aloysia Weber. (He ultimatelymarried her sister Constanze.) If Mozart's dislike of the Flute was as great as he claimed there are few signs in the Flute Concerto No.1 in G major particularly in the expressive central Adagio ma non troppo. The outermovements are an Allegro maestoso and a concluding Rondo: Tempo di Menuetto. The work is scored for two oboes (replaced by flutes in the Adagio) two horns and strings. 7 European Salon Pieces. Par POPP WILHELM. In the 19th Century nationalist themes came into fashion. Composers drew on songs and dances from their native lands, working them into paraphrased adaptations, pot pourri arrangements and sets of variations or incorporating folk elements from various cultures in their compositions. Flautist Wilhelm Popp (1828-1902), who wrote music for his instrument at every level of difficulty, also took up this popular trend. In this collection seven of his ‘easily playable’ compositions have been chosen with musical links to different European countries. Here again Popp shows his ability to distil the essence from musical styles and fashions of his time, setting lyrical and virtuoso passages so well for the instrument that their effectiveness far outweighs any difficulties. The popularity of his pieces for tuition purposes, school concerts or youth music competitions remains undiminished to this day.
