Music from the last movement of the Ninth Symphony. Par BEETHOVEN LUDWIG VAN. The European Hymn is the hymn not only of the European Union but of Europe in a broader sense. The melody has been taken from the Ninth Symphony by Ludwig van Beethoven from 1823. In the last movement of this symphony Beethoven set music to the 'Ode to Joy' by Friedrich von Schiller from 1785. This poem sprang from Schiller's idealistic vision of men who become brothers – a vision Beethoven shared with him. In 1972 the Council of Europe adopted Beethoven's 'Ode to Joy' as its anthem. The well-known conductor Herbert von Karajan was commissioned to arrange three instrumental versions – for solo piano, wind orchestra and symphony orchestra. Without words, in the universal language of music, the anthem is an expression of the idealistic values of freedom, peace and solidarity which Europe stands for. In 1985 the heads of state and government adopted the hymn as the EU's official anthem. It does not replace the national anthems of the member states, but rather celebrates common values as well as unity in diversity. In October of 1997, I received an invitation from New York Philharmonic Music Director Kurt Masur asking me to contribute a musical message for the coming millennium. Maestro Masur's letter read 'My dream would be to have you provide us with a work lasting from 10 to 15 minutes that could both stand on its own or perhaps be combined with musical messages with other composers which we might compile for a full evening's concert.' I welcomed the opportunity to bring one of six unique perspectives to this collective exploration of the meanings of the new millennium, and it is my hope that the Multi-Arts Production Fund will chose to support the New York Philharmonic's 'Messages for the Millennium' project. for orchestra. Par LIGETI GYORGY. Das Orchesterstück 'Melodien' habe ich 1971 komponiert. Ich versuchte, die dichte 'Mikropolyphonie' meiner Musiksprache aufzulockern, transparenter zu machen. Im Grunde genommen blieb ich treu zu meinem früheren Stil: die musikalische Form entfaltet sich wie ein ausgespanntes Gewebe in der kontinuierlich weiterfliessenden Zeit, doch verschmelzen die Einzelstimmen nicht mehr (wie in meiner früheren Musik), vielmehr sind sie in ihrer Überlagerung und Verflechtung einzeln durchhörbar. Die Stimmen werden zu individuellen Melodien, mit eigenem Duktus, eigenem Tempo, Rhythmus und intervallischer Struktur. Hört man das Werk zum ersten Male, erscheint es als ein Chaos diskrepanter Melodien - kennt man aber die Musik besser, werden die internen Zusammenhänge, wird das verborgene harmonische Skelett der Form erfassbar. Music Of Our Time. Par SCHNEBEL DIETER. In this work Schnebel attempts to apply the idea of the Baroque canon - as exemplified in Bach’s ‘Art of Fugue’ - to modern concepts of tonal colouring. The ‘Motu proprio’ of the 7 mixed groups of orchestral instruments intensifies within 28 short emotional sections to the Baroque ‘Motu contrario’. In ‘Diapason’, literally translated ‘in the octave’ but in the ancient Greek music tradition taken to mean ‘through or across everything’ among other things, the orchestra is arranged into 13 groups according to families of instruments and tonal colour. Schnebel alternately uses the term ‘fugue’ in the strict sense of the Baroque period and in its more general, purely architectonic meaning./ Répertoire / Orchestre

'The title, No other people., is taken from Raymond Roussel's New Impressions of Africa, a fifty-nine page poem which took him fifteen years to write - a length of time mainly caused by his tortuous compositional methods. In Roussel, sentences are broken down in maze-like ways, often producing others which relate to the sound of the original. I'm not aware of any direct, illustrative connection between the music of No other people. and Roussel's book. But I was very struck by the everydayness of Zo's drawings. There is something poignant in his not knowing what he was illustrating. Like the drawings of a blind person. Their banality takes on a mysteriousness by being placed by Roussel in his book, seeming to illustrate bizarre events unknown to Zo. They are impersonal, the people in them unaware that they lead another life in a poem of which they know nothing. Something of this is in the music.' Gerald Barry, 2009/ Répertoire / Orchestre

?Appalachian Spring? was composed in 1943-44 as a ballet for Miss Martha Graham on a commission from the Elisabeth Sprague Coolidge Foundation. It was first performed by Miss Graham and her company at the Coolidge Festival in the Libarary of Congress, Washington, D.C., on October 30, 1994.



The original scoring called for a chamber ensemble of thirteen instruments. The present arrangement for symphony orchestra was made by the composer in the spring of 1945. It is a condensed version of the ballet, retaining all essential features but omitting those sections in which the interest is primarily choreographic.



In 1945 ?Appalachian Spring? received the Pulitzer Prize for music as well as the award of the Music Critics Circle of New York for the outstanding theatrical work of the season. / Partition /
