Dramma giocoso (Opera) in two acts. Par MOZART WOLFGANG AMADEUS. In early 1787 Mozart made his first visit to Prague, where he attended a performance of Le nozze di Figaro on 17 January and conducted the performance five days later. Thoroughly impressed by the huge success of his opera and the personal triumphs he had enjoyed during his visit, he and his wife left the city on 7 February, but not before he had concluded a contract to write a new opera for the next season. This contract, signed with Pasquale Bondini, the director of Count Nostitz’s National Theater, led to the composition of his first opera for Prague, Don Giovanni (K. 527). Ever since its première on 29 October 1787, the opera has moved audiences over andover again and has occupied a special position in Mozart’s rich and variegated output for the stage. Par ROSSINI GIOACHINO. This study score is based on the critical edition of “ The Barber Of Seville ” edited by Patricia B. Brauner and published in 2008 as part of the series “Works of Gioachino Rossini”. But who needs a new critical edition of “ The Barber Of Seville ”? The opera has been performed in theatres throughout the world since 1816 and has never been absent from the repertoire. There are two reasons for a critical new edition: firstly, none of the early editions satisfy modern demands for a scholarly-critical edition. Secondly, there is a wealth of previously unpublished material relating to this opera, of great interest to both scholars andperformers. Thus the famous overture, which Rossini had already used in his earlier opera “Aureliano in Palmira”, differs noticeably from earlier editions in many places. The new edition enables performers to perform the overture either in its original scoring (as in “Aureliano in Palmira”), which includes two Flutes, two Oboes and Timpani, or in the scoring for the subsequent opera “ The Barber Of Seville ” (with just one flute, one oboe and no timpani). Mass in Time of War. Par HAYDN FRANZ JOSEF. Haydn was in England, in 1795, when he received word from his new Prince, Nicolaus II Esterházy, that the Esterházy orchestra was to be reformed, and Haydn was to serve again as active Capellmeister. Prince Nicolaus II demanded little from his Capellmeister, except the usual routine of administration; but Haydn was to compose, every year, a new Mass for the name day of the Princess Josepha Maria, which was celebrated the Sunday afterwards in the Bergkirche at Eisenstadt. It is known that a new Haydn mass was performed before a packed congregation in the Piaristenkirche in Vienna on St. Stephen’s Day (26 December) 1796. The writer of these notes examined – when preparingthis edition – the music archives of the church, and found contemporary parts on the Missa in tempore belli in the church; and it seems certain that this (and not the Heiligmesse) was the work performed on that occasion, and thus also the work which Haydn had just finished and performed in Eisenstadt. The cantata “ Wie Schön Leuchtet Der Morgenstern ” BWV 1 was written for 25 March 1725, when the Feast of the Annunciation of the Blessed Mary coincided with Palm Sunday. It forms the conclusion of Bach ’s cantata cycle of 1724/25. The anonymous librettist retained the outer verses 1 and 7 of Philipp Nicolai’s text (1599) which is assigned to the feast of Epiphany according to old tradition but was also sung at the Annunciation of the Blessed Mary. Verses 2 to 6 form the basis for the Tenor and Bassrecitatives and the Soprano and Tenor arias. Bach ’s composition has a particularly festive brilliance with his use of 2 Horns, 2 Oboes Da Caccia and the two concertante solo Violins.
