Unknown until their discovery was announced in 1971 by Péter Várnai in an article in Die Musikforschung, this set of six suites for solo violin, published in 1696, is in all likelihood a second edition of, or second collection to his First Dozen Allemandes, Courantes, Sarabands, and Gigues for Solo Violin without Basso Continuo published in 1682 which are considered lost. Along with his suite for solo violin published in 1683 in Le Mercure Galant, these suites for unaccompanied violin are the first in their medium and undoubtedly served as an inspiration for Bach?s Six Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin.This edition is a modern transcription of Westhoff?s unique notation and provides editorial fingering and bowing suggestions. A facsimile of the only extant 1696 publication, which is housed in the Somogyi Károly Városi és Megyei Könyvtár in Szeged, Hungary, is included in the back of this edition for reference. This edition was created with the intention of making these suites more accessible, and to be used as a pedagogical tool in preparation for the study of solo Bach. / Date parution : 2022-07-20/ Recueil / Violon

Drones & Violin was composed by Nico Muhly for Pekka Kuusisto in 2010.Each movement begins with either the Piano or Violin establishing a drone for the duration of the movement with either the Piano or Violin producing a delicate expressive line over the top. Each movement triggers a different sense of emotion throughout.

This piece draws on pentatonic folk tune material and is in rondo form. Both instruments imitate the drum beating with the music concluding with a climax of intensive double stopping and chords. A version for clarinet and piano is also available.

Anders Brødsgaard's Dream Fragment  for solo Violin was composed in 1989. Commissioned by Nordisk Konservatorieråd. Programnote: DREAM FRAGMENT er skrevet i 1989 på bestilling af Nordisk Konservatorieråd og indgik i en workshop på det Jyske Musikkonservatorium hvor de strygerstuderende indstuderede værker skrevet af nordiske komponister. Desværre blevDREAM FRAGMENT erklæret for uspilleligt i første omgang indtil en ung solistklasse-studerende Johannes Søe Hansen fik fingre i det.  DREAM FRAGMENT begynder på de højest mulige flageolet-toner bevæger sig gradvist ned i ’normalt’ violintone-område og forsvinder hen mod slutningen igen op i det højeste flageolet-leje.  ’Hovedtemaet’ i stykket er en brudt akkord - spillet med violinetude-bueføring i Paganini-stil - som optræder både som flageolet-akkord som fortissimo-akkord som pizzicato-akkord som en melodisk bevægelse etc.  Stykket blev det første i en række - mere eller mindre uspillelige - stykker for violin og cello hvor jeg udnytter strygeinstrumenternes naturlige flageoletter - dvs de overtoner der fremkommer når man berører strengen ganske let på nogle bestemte punkter.
