All works are arranged for SATB Choir. James Whitbourn has become renowned throughout the world for his acclaimed compositions and settings of numerous texts. He has been described as truly original and an innovator of contemporary British choral music, collaborating with people like Archbishop Desmond Tutu and the Choir of King's College, Cambridge. The former appears here, as A Prayer Of Desmond Tutu, a setting of one of the Archbishop's prayers. His arrangements and compositions for the King's College Choir have been universally critically acclaimed, with A Great And Mighty Wonder, Nunc Dimittis and Were You There? representing these hugely popular collaborations. Whitbourn has also had a very close relationship with the BBC since his beginnings as a composer, working with them on three pieces within The Choral Collection. Eternal Rest and Give Us The Wings Of Faith were both composed specifically for television broadcast, the former (in its orchestral form) was played for the funeral of the Queen Mother in 2002. His longest work, for which he is most famous, is a setting of text from'the Diary of Anne Frank'. There Is No Speech Or Language comes from this work, taking its text from other sources, but that still maintain the beauty and tragedy of the wider piece. Composed for the wedding of James Roman and Grace SvatekTrinity Church Princeton New Jersey November 4 2017 Duration: 4.5minutes James Whitbourn's setting of the text popular at weddings Set me as a seal upon thine heart is a worthy competitor for Walton's well-known version. For SATE choir and not too demanding -though needing vocal clarity and accurate pitching - it is in an ABA form the gentle opening and concluding sections separated by the build-up to the climax on a C-sharp major chord at the end of the phrase 'many waterscannot quench love' followed by a brief organ interlude before subsiding to a piano ending. The whole is lightly and supportively accompanied on the organ. It is well worth considering by choirs needing new ideas for theirwedding playlist. - Organists' Review

Gratias Agimus Tibi is a work by James Whitbourn for Unaccompanied Voices (in any combination) with an optional 'Amen' for SATB Choir and Organ ad lib. A setting of Latin text by Nigel Palmer the workwas composed for the college grace of St Stephen's House Oxford. Please note that the lyrics are in Latin. A review in the June 2016 edition of Organist's Review says that 'this anthem would be ofgreat use for St Stephen's Day and any service that may focus on the Saints...Another enjoyable composition from James Whitbourn who is fast becoming a very important and original voice in the field of church music.'

Video Caelos Apertos (For SATB Chorus Unaccompanied) by James Whitbourn was commissioned for the singers of Medina High School Ohio Tyler L. Skidmore conductor to mark their tour to England andtheir visit to St Stephen’s House Oxford.The March 2015 issue of Organist's Review gave Video Caelos Apertos a glowing appraisal stating that it's 'a youthful joyful and positive workwhich succeeds in capturing the visionary quality of the text.'Duration: c. 4 min

POD-James Whitbourn's Agnus Dei From Missa Carolae. Missa Carolae was commissioned by Rochester Cathedral the second oldest cathedral in England to mark the 1400th anniversary ofits foundation. It was first performed there on 24 December 2004 by the Rochester Cathedral Choirs Andy Findon (Fife) the Locke Brass Consort Edmund Aldhouse (Organ) Joby Burgess and Catherine Ring (Percussion) directed byRoger Sayer. The work is intended to invoke a dance-like spirit which is true to the origin of the carol as a simple dance form. The choir parts should be very well-known so that the singers can sing with the whole oftheir bodies and not just their voices. This version is a reduced scoring for SATB (unchanged) with Organ and optional Piccolo and also acts as the vocal score to the full version. In this scoring the Piccolo adds to theeffectiveness of the piece. In either scoring the Piccolo may be replaced with a Flute Fife or even a more rustic Pipe as was used at the first performance. The original scoring for SATB with Piccolo Brass (3 Trumpetsand 3 Trombones) Percussion (2 players) and Organ accompaniment is the preferred version. The Piccolo part (CH79893-01) is common toboth scorings and is available on sale or hire with the full version. The Organ accompaniment in this score is for performance of the version for SATB Piccolo and Organ only. An A4 spiral-bound version of this score may bepreferable for the organist (CH79893-02). The separate Organ part - available on hire - must be used for the version with instruments.An ad lib. part for the congregation (CH70961 pack of 50) is incorporated into the fullscoring of Missa Carolae. The Life Of C.S. Lewis In The Planets Of The Middle Ages-The Seven Heavens - The Life Of C.S. Lewis In The Planets Of The Middle Ages is a work by James Whitbourn for SATB Chorus and Orchestra. The piece was commissioned by the Belfast Philharmonic Society onthe occasion of their 140th Anniversary Season 2014-5 and first performed in the Ulster Hall on 30th May 2015 by Belfast Philharmonic Choir. The work lasts around 31 minutes and this is the VocalScore. This Vocal Score is compatible with both the Orchestral version and the Chamber Ensemble version. The libretto is a 'musical portrait of C.S. Lewis' viewed through thelens of the seven heavens of the pre-Copernican model of the solar system in which Lewis had a deep interest. The seven movements follow these seven planets which also correspond to the days of the week telling the story ofLewis's life. The text itself is drawn from a variety of sources including the Orphic hymns Psalms Shakespeare Shelley C.S. Lewis himself and others.
