The episode from Ovid‘s “Metamorphoses” in which Daphne attempts to escape Apollo’s advances by turning into a laurel tree, causing the devastated god to weave a laurel crown in memory of the nymph, has inspired the masterworks of many artists. Gian Lorenzo Bernini, whose famous marble sculpture is housed in the Galleria Borghese in Rome, is only one example of this. Many composers set this myth to music including young George Frideric Handel with his grand-scale dramatic cantata “Apollo e Dafne”. The composer started working on the work shortly before leaving Italy in 1709, most likely finishing it the following year in Hanover. Bärenreiter now presents a vocal score of the opera-like cantata, the highlights of which include Dafne’s aria “Felicissima quest’alma” (accompanied by solo oboe) and Apollo’s famous lament “Cara pianta”./ Répertoire / Chant et Piano

Georg Frideric Händel 's Serse (Xerxes) has everything one would expect from a Baroque opera - many intertwining love stories, affairs, intrigues, scheming, misunderstanding and forgiving - all presented in the great master's magnificent music. The opera is set in Persia in 480 BC and is very loosely based upon Xerxes I of Persia, though there is little in either the Baroque libretto or music that is relevant to that setting, the main focus is on the characters ( Serse , Arsamene, Amastre, Romilda, Atalanta, Ariodate and Elviro - some of which are based on real historical persons) and their plotting. The English version for the opera in three acts was made for the English National Opera's production, first performed in 1985, on the 300th anniversary of Händel 's birth. In this edition of the Vocal score with the original Italian and the later English lyrics accompaniment is provided by the instruments indicated in the orchestration (2 Recorders (or Flutes), 2 Oboes, 2 Horns in F, Trumpet in D, Strings and Continuo [Harpsichord, Cello, Double Bass, Bassoon]), but can also be played by the Piano. Par SCHUBERT FRANZ. Volume 9 of the new Urtext edition of Schubert's lieder contains lieder composed during the spring and summer of 1816, some of which follow upon series started in 1815. They are available in separate books for high, medium and low voice. The volume was completed by the eminent Schubert scholar Walter Dürr who passed away at the beginning of 2018. It was in 1816 that Schubert completed his settings of Ossian's songs and added lieder on texts by Johann Georg Jacobi, Johann Peter Uz and Matthias Claudius. Also included are the lieder from the Grob family songbook. This edition includes parts transposed for G flutes, such that any combination of flutes can be used. The Lilliputians can be piccolos, and the Brobdingnagians a pair of contra flutes.
