Down by the Salley Gardens is a guaranteed heartbreaker on your next concert. Since the lyrics of this Irish traditional are also supplied with the set a combination of band with solo voice or even choir is a definite possibility. The Arranger: Leafing through a song-book containing traditionals etc. I was immediately struck by this song and its exceptionally beautiful and atmospheric melody. I simply had to do something with it. Een meeslepende traditional van Ierse komaf staat aan de basis van dit wonderschone werkje. Down bythe Salley Gardens belooft een hartenbreker te worden op uw eerstvolgende concert. De tekst van deze Ierse traditional wordt meegeleverd en daarmee is een combinatie met zang ook zeer goed mogelijk. De arrangeur: Bladerend door een liedboek met traditionals enz. was ik meteen getroffen door dit nummer en zijn uitzonderlijk mooie en sfeervolle melodie. Ik moest gewoon iets mee doen.

Turandot (1926) est un opéra posthume. Puccini décède en 1924 laissant son opéra incomplet. Turandot sera achevé par Franco Alfano d?après les esquisses du compositeur. Lyonesse was commissioned by the Brass Band Heritage Trust as the test piece for the Finals of the National Youth Brass Band Championships held in Manchester in April 2005. This atmospheric music ideal as a test piece for First and Second section bands takes its inspiration from the lost kingdom of Lyonesse the mythical spur of land linking Cornwall and the Scilly Isles and its associated legend of Tristan and Isolde. Le choral Für deinen Thron tret? ich hiermit de Jean-Sébastien Bach est au centre de cette composition.Anton Bruckner fut un des plus fervents admirateurs de Jean-Sébastien Bach. D?ailleurs cette admiration si profonde fut riche de conséquences sur sa propre oeuvre. Dans Spiriti de Thomas Doss on sent planer l?esprit de Bruckner dont l?univers est évoqué par un fragment du choral de la Symphonie n° 5 qui apparaît en filigrane à la fin de l?oeuvre.L?introduction une sorte de marche funèbre expose les premiers fragments du choral de Bach. La musique éclate en segments que Thomas Doss combine et recombine pour construire un premier Allegro turbulentqui s?épanouit dans des tutti puissants. La trame devient exubérante et le divers fragments du choral de Bach finissent par tourbillonner les uns autour des autres dans un vol désordonné.Le passage central (religioso) est de nature méditative et introspective. Une structure en noires pleure une âme éplorée. S?appuyant sur des éléments minimalistes associés aux segments utilisés précédemment le troisième et dernier passage s?achemine vers l?exposition grandiose du choral de Bach. Dans le tourbillon de cloches on sent planer l?ombre des deux grands maîtres de l?orgue.

In this composition William Vean takes you on a journey through the fascinating and exciting world of animals. Apart from it being a composition filled with 'special effects' Animal Kingdom contains many educational elements such as playing inswing (triplets feeling) chromatics flutter tonguing gypsy tuning varying keys and of course dynamics and articulation. The melodic lines occur in all four voices as well as in all percussion parts providing each musician with theopportunity to play a solo or to accompany. Highly recommended for your youth band! William Vean is an educational composer. He knows how to musically shape the special elements from our daily lives. His music is therefore veryexpressive containing creative solutions to possible problems. Special ways of playing make his music particularly interesting for the winds but the percussion section is also featured in his special effects. The world of the animalsalways plays on ones imagination. In Animal Kingdom William Vean has portrayed a number of animals in a special manner: Kevin Kangaroo - The jumping character of this animal can be heard in different voices. The swing style alsoemphasizes the characteristic movements of the kangaroo. Playing in swing style can be practised by using scales. Eddy Elephant - For some of his smaller fellow fauna friends this can be quite an ordeal but for Eduard (Eddy for friendsand intimates) it is his daily walk. Baldrick Bat - Baldrick the Bat is a mysterious character. This can be heard in the fast moving valves and keys accompanied by special effects in the percussion section. Curtis Camel - Curtisthe Camel trudges across the desert feeling bored. The idea that the horizon will never change does not affect him anymore. He has accepted his fate. The distinctive tones from the gypsy scale provide the suitable oriental sounds. BettyButterfly - Butterfly Betty elegantly and without worries flutters from flower to flower in the garden. Her motto: Carpe Diem (Seize the Day). Betty is a one-day butterfly. Marvin Monkey - A 'swing' monkey stirs up the feelings. Evenmembers of the orchestra will look like real monkeys. How about your audience? Each part has its own difficulties and challenges. Important in the first part is playing 'in swing' (triplets feeling). This can be practised usingscales. In the second part ensemble playing and balance are important. In Baldrick additional information on the effects that have to be played might be useful. 'New' sounds are of course welcome. Curtis the Camel introduces thegypsy scale. Additional explanation of the use of the scale might be useful. Key changes are interesting in this part. A slight accent on the first beat of the bar will add to the charm of this part. Marvin the Monkey brings back the swingrhythm that was introduced in the first part altern

South Down Pictures was commissioned by Millenium Brass 2000 an organisation comprising three brass bands from the county of Sussex England.The bands (Patcham Silver Hangleton and Brighton Silver) had got together to organise many events to mark the new millennium and these culminated in a concert in Hove Town Hall on July 9th 2000 when all three bands combined to give the first performance of South Down Pictures. The composer spent much of his childhood amongst the South Downs a range of hills in Sussex which runs parallel to the sea.Opening with a strong unison passage interrupted briefly by faster figures based on the interval of a fifth South Down Picturesdevelops with an often-passionate legato melody. Reaching a climax this is then followed by the main vivo section of the work whose main theme is based on the earlier ‘fifth’ figures. A bridge passage leads to a short chorale figure and a rhythmic climax which dissolves into a plaintive cornet solo over staccato chords. This theme is taken up by the whole band and leads back to a recapitulation of the main theme and earlier material. The cornet tune returns triumphantly in the major key before the opening unison passage reappears to provide a stirring coda.

Another World’s Hell was commissioned in versions for brass wind and fanfare bands by the Société Cantonale des Musiques Vaudoises and the Association Cantonale des Musiques Neuchâteloises for the 2013 Swiss Cantonales festivals. It is inspired by a passage in Aldous Huxley’s classic 1932 science-fiction novel Brave New World which  describes in unusually close detail the music that is being played at a dance. This is Dobson’s interpretation of  the  imagined  ‘future music’ that Huxley dreamed of. Brass Band Grade 5Duration: 13 minutes

En 1840 elle épousa son cousin le prince Albert de Saxe-Cobourg-Gotha. Leprince consort originaire d?Allemagne importa bon nombre de traditions de Noël allemandes au Royaume-Uni. Ainsi il fit découvrir aux Anglais la coutume du sapin et les cartes de Noël entre autres contribuant largement au Noël typiquement anglaistel que nous le connaissons aujourd?hui.Bien que les chants de Noël font l?objet d?une longue tradition en Angleterre de nombreuses mélodies que nous chantons proviennent ducontinent européen ou des États-Unis. Je savais bien que le célébrissimeSilent Night (Douce nuit) était d?origine autrichienne et que Hark the Herald Angels Sing (Écoutez le chant des Anges) était d?origine allemande. Pourtant quelle ne fut pas ma surprise d?apprendre qu?Away in a Manger (Sur la paillefraîche) ou encore We Three Kings nous venaient des États-Unis et que Ding Dong Merrily on High était un noël d?origine française. Quoiqu?il en soit j?ai réussi à constituer un canevas de mélodies anglaises pour réaliser cefestival de chants de Noël. »Philip SparkeRemarques sur l?interprétation : Cet arrangement est adapté pour une interprétation avec ou sans Chœur. Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah est sans aucun doute la perle de Mélodie du Sud (Song of the South) une production phare des Studios Disney. Andrew Watkin en a fait un joyeux arrangement pour Quatuor de Cuivres et Percussion (optionnelle).[Instrumentation possible : 2 Trompettes Sib Cor en Fa/Mib Trombone en Ut (BC) ou Trombone Sib (TC)].

Dans ce morceau le compositeur dépeint une mère jetée dans le doute sur le fait de garder son enfant ou non. D?abord hésitante la musique se développe en une sorte de transe dans laquelle la mère danse de plus en plus vite entraînée par les cris silencieux et le rythme cardiaque de l'enfant à naître accompagnée de ses peurs ses doutes et ses espoirs. Le choral de Bach Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern est à la base de ce morceau déjà imposé à plusieurs reprises lors de concours renommés !

for Low Brass Ensemble-Le thème principal de cette pièce est une rythmique ascendante qui telle une question est posée à deux reprises au cours du dialogue qui s´instaure entre les différents intruments. Les réponses données interviennent comme des tutti homonophiques.La conclusion est la réinterprétation étincellante du thème.

The Turtle Dove est sans aucun doute l'une des chansons traditionnelles britanniques des plus connues et peut être nommée d'un seul souffle avec Greensleves ou Drink to me Only. L'arrangement pourorchestre d'harmonie réalisé par le compositeur et arrangeur suisse Etienne Crausaz met en valeur le théme intimiste de la version originale.

Simon Dobson wrote his 'Four Sketches' at the request of Peter Bossano Head of Brass at the Royal College of Music in recognition of the 25th anniversary of Benjamin Britten’s death. The first movement 'Fanfare' quotes directly from the opening violin melody from Britten’s song cycle Les Illuminations. This melodic line is superimposed upon sonorous Lydian mode chords to project a majestic sound. The second movement 'Prayer' is a definite contrast being and much more reflective and pensive in it’s mood and featuring a dream like euphonium cadenza. The third movement 'Funeral March' builds from a soft chordal opening to a chaotic and confusedfortississimo climax with flourishes in the cornets and pounding tri-tones across the basses before plunging into silence for a flugel cadenza to finish. The final Finale movement is much more positive from the off with its jaunty melodies over a Brittenesque ostinato. The block chordal passages offer a crashing climax making for an exciting conclusion to an excellent new work for the medium. Simon Dobson’s 'Four Sketches' was the winning entry in the European Brass Band Composer Competition held in Brussels in March 2002.
