Sonata no.1 in c minor op. 32-At the beginning of the 1870s Camille?Saint-Saëns showed a particular fondness for the Violoncello. He completed his first Cello Sonata in December 1872 immediately after finishing his first Cello Concerto.The sonata is strongly reminiscent of Beethoven not only due to the key of c minor but also predominantly on account of its gripping dramatic art. The exceptional position of this demanding in parts highly virtuosicsonata was quickly recognised by the public and critics and so the work soon found its way into concert repertoire.?Henle's Urtext edition takes all surviving sources into account for the first time ever. PascalRogé and David Geringas kindly provided the markings for the Piano and Cello parts.

The cellist Friedrich August Kummer is one of the best-known virtuosos of the 19th century. Among his numerous compositions, arrangements and concert paraphrases are these catchy transcriptions of Schubert lieder. Leos Janacek wrote only two works for cello and piano of which only Pohadka (Fairy Tale) became established in the concert repertoire. Although he completed the work the composer did not want to have it published. The history of the work’s composition is long and complicated. Janacek began writing the work before 1910 however the Pohadka (Fairy Tale) only received its final form after a series of corrections in 1923. The second composition the Presto is incomplete. Only a sketch exists which Janacek did not develop further. The original tempo marking of Allegro was changed by Janacek himself to Presto. The work has beendiscussed under this title in recent Janacek literature. In the supplement of this edition an early version of A Tale is included. The source to this version is a copy owned by Antonin Vana one of the first interpreters of the composition. The early version of A Tale offers a valuable and interesting alternative to today’s known version with its marked differences such as the considerably changed ending of the first movement and the original form of four movements. Cette ?uvre de circonstance devint par la suite un chef-d??uvre pour l??ternit? dont est parvenue ? la post?rit? une partition autographe de la main du compositeur dat?e de 1783. Pour la publication de la r?duction pour piano de ce concerto nous avons eu le plaisir de collaborer avec la sp?cialiste de Haydn Sonja Gerlach. Cette derni?reenrichit l??dition urtext d?une pr?face d?taill?e o? elle aborde notamment le sujet de la r?alisation des ornements et celui des cadences reproduites.

D?allure tout à fait classique, les Variations en forme de chaconne furent interprétées en première audition le 23 février 1902 par Gaston Courras, violoncelliste de l?opéra de Paris, et l?auteur au piano. Cette pièce s?inscrit dans le mouvement de redécouverte des maîtres clavecinistes du Grand Siècle qui s?opère au tournant des xixe et xxe siècle. On sait par ailleurs l?intérêt que portait La Tombelle à des compositeurs comme Couperin ou Rameau, les exécutant lui-même souvent en concert. D?autres ?uvres de ce compositeur font également référence de manière explicite à une certaine forme de classicisme hérité du passé. Pensons par exemple à la Passacaille ou à l?Air varié dans le style ancien pour violon et piano, à la Toccata dans le style ancien de la Suite d?orgue pour le temps de Noël ou encore à la Suite pour 3 violoncelles. Pièce brillante de concert, ces Variations en forme de chaconne allient l?apparente simplicité du matériel de base employé à une grande virtuosité mettant en avant l?interprète.

Après 'Jazz Suite' pour violoncelle solo (Schott, CB 224), le violoncelliste italien et musicien de jazz Lucio Amanti explore les possibilités de la musique de jazz sur le violoncelle dans cette sonate avec accompagnement de piano. Il veut offrir de nouveaux moyens et de styles pour violoncellistes issus de la tradition classique. C'est pourquoi cette pièce est aussi basée sur ses propres improvisations unis sous la forme d'une sonate. Le résultat est un effet de croisement intéressant entre le jazz et la forme sonate traditionnelle, une pièce de concert enrichissante avec de nombreux personnages et des ingrédients différents: un peu de be-bop, une touche de latin et de tango, du jazz cool, un soupçon de Stravinsky et bien plus encore. Tous ces éléments sont traités de manière égale et faire de cette sonate un morceau de jazz adapté à la salle de concert et le club de jazz aussi bien.
