The Psalms inspired Mendelssohn throughout his working life, and, aside from a cappella settings, he left behind five great orchestral Psalms. Schumann assesed in 1837 that Psalm 42 was the highest point that he [Mendelssohn] reached as a composer for the church. Indeed the highest point recent church music has reached at all. This work is now available in carus music, the choir app! Score available separately - see item CA.4007200.

Since its first complete performance in 1868 in the Cathedral of Bremen, Brahms's Ein deutsches Requiem is, without question, one of the key works in the history of the oratorio. The reputation of the work is based not only on its unusually concentrated musical structure, but also on the original conception of the text: Brahms assembled important passages from both the Old and New Testaments in Luther's translation so that thoughts on sorrow and consolation would obviously refer to one another. In contrast to many other oratorios of the 19th century Brahms places the choir, the voice of the community, in the center of this interdenominational celebration of the dead. The Magnificat shows the typical personal style of the composer Gunther Martin Gottsche, who was inspired by the colorful harmonics of French Impressionism as well as by elements of jazz music. He has given equal consideration to both the vocal line and the ease of execution as well as an understanding for the musical events and a comprehensible interpretation of the text. The work, which was revised at the beginning of 2016, is based on an earlier work commissioned for the Dresden Kreuzkirche. A version with organ accompaniment (instead of orchestra) is also available.

He who seeks a moving and lyrical work with rewarding roles for the choir could do no better than to choose Rheinberger's Stern von Bethlehem. In nine scenes (Expectation, The shepherds, The appearance of the angels, The Star, etc.) the Christmas story is lyrically portrayed. Songlike and pastoral choruses, a heartfelt soprano part and finally, the exotic, charming procession of the Wisemen through the desert have insured this work an increasing popularity. It was written in 1890 to a libretto by Rheinberger's wife Fanny. On account of their similar scoring, this work can be easily combined for a performance with Mendelssohn's Vom Himmel hoch or Die Geburt Christi. Score and part available separately - see item CA.5016400.

This is a beautiful and rewarding composition by a former member of the famous St. Thomas Boys Choir in Leipzig and later Dresden Kreuzkantor. Inspite of the relatively easy level of difficulty, its effect will not fail to impress. This three-movement Christmas cantata for mixed choir and orchestra makes it possible to perform the piece both in worship services and in concert. Score and part available separately - see item CA.1002000.

The Stabat Mater is the last work composed by Giuseppe Verdi. He completed it in 1897 at the age of 84. One year later it was published with the somewhat earlier Te Deum as part of the Quattro pezzi sacri. Verdi set Mary's meditation in the face of her crucified son, a classic of Medieval Latin poetry, in an operatically expressive style for choir and large orchestra. Verdi's Stabat Mater is now published for the first time in a critical edition. Also available in the series Choir & organ. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.2729400.

Johann Adam Hiller's Psalm 100 can be considered as the highpoint of his church music. The work was known during the lifetime of the composer far beyond Germany, even to the Baltic States. Now the first printed edition of this beautifully sounding psalm setting is available. The five-movement composition is suited both for concert as well as liturgical purposes. Even today this composition of the St. Thomas Cantor and founder of the Leipziger Gewandhaus concert series will not fail to miss its mark. Score and part available separately - see item CA.4094300.
