?I asked my friend the poet Einar Askestad if he could write a poem for me about love between father and son brothers and God. I felt that these forms of love are seldom sung about. The poem moved me greatly and I have tried to put music to these words which is simple yet full of beauty. This is of course the biggest reason why most of my compositions are for female choirs the knowledge that what I write during the night will be tested the next evening is a driving force that not so many are lucky enough to have.I work as a voice music theory and conducting teacher and conductor in Uppsala were I was born -65 and still live. After plunging his contemporaries into the delights of Renaissance revelry with the ‘Bal De Béatrice D'Este’ the composer continued to explore the past with a tribute in 1907 to Rameau (in the final drumroll of the ‘Sonatine’ for Piano). But they all eventually learn a certain 'Stranger on the straw' came to earth to change the world, and that even people and things we don't understand can sometimes be miracles in disguise. Composer and Organist John Merbecke lived in interesting times. He was born soon after the beginning of the 16th century and spent his whole life in service of music at St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle. In 1543 he was arrested for heresy and sentenced to death but received a royal pardon unlike the three others with whom he was arrested. He returned to his position at Windsor and began work on a concordance of the English Bible to replace the one that had been destroyed when he was arrested. The Book of Common Praier Noted was published in 1550 at a time when the continued use of plainchant was controversial. Here Merbecke sets the chants but in English ratherthan Latin.As a piece of history for students of monody and as a part of the church’s heritage Merbecke’s setting is invaluable.

James Cartwright Macy (c.1845-1918) was an American songwriter and composer. Born in New York City he spent most of his life living and working in Cleveland.
