A festive piece for church and concert hallComposed around 1760,Die Auferstehung und Himmelfahrt Jesuis one of Telemann's last large-scale vocal works. The libretto, by Karl Wilhelm Ramler, recounts the Biblical events from the Resurrection to the Ascension in seven sections.Alternating between recitative, da capo arias and festive choruses, Telemann succeeds in producing a vivid and effective musical interpretation of the libretto. Our edition of this oratorio is based on the Urtext fromGeorg Philipp Telemann Musical Works. The score contains a realisation of the continuo part. The work is ideal for performances in church and concert hall alike.

Thanks to the false attribution to Johann Sebastian Bach (BWV 219) of the cantata for St. Michael's Day Siehe! es hat uberwunden der Lowe TVWV 1:1328 by Georg Philipp Telemann, one of Telemann's works experienced an unusually early renaissance. In 1884 the cantata was published in the Bach-Gesamtausgabe (Complete Edition) and from then onwards enjoyed some fame as an apocryphal Bach cantata. Alfred Durr was able to identify the work as a composition by Telemann in the 1950s. Score available separately - see item CA.3913600.

Georg Philipp Telemann has long been perceived as a composer of sacred music, and particularly of the German-language church cantata. However, in the course of his long life he also composed church works setting Latin texts. In addition to works for smaller ensembles there is presently only one larger psalm setting, Deus judicium tuum, that is available in a new edition. This is now joined by the first ever scholarly, critical edition of his Magnificat in C major. Telemann probably composed this impressive work for the dedication of the organ in the Leipzig Neukirche in 1704. Like Bach's well-known Magnificat, it is scored for three trumpets and timpani. For ambitious church choirs, the work is really worthwhile, and is also a most effective piece for audiences to enjoy. Score available separately - see item CA.3914300.

In the autumn of 1721, when Georg Philipp Telemann became cantor at the Hamburg Johanneum and music director of the city’s five principal churches, he faced the challenge of composing and performing a new Passion setting every year. The ninety-minute St. John Passion of 1745 was written in a winningly clear and transparent style, with two large choral numbers, six chorales (probably joined by the congregation) and several turbae that pose interesting yet manageable demands on the chorus. The plain and unassuming recitatives and the eleven sharply defined yet contemplative arias give soloists broad leeway for artistic interpretation. This volume follows the Urtext of vol. 29 of the Telemann Edition, thereby offering a reliable text at the pinnacle of modern scholarship.

Telemann’s passion oratorio “Der Tod Jesu†was composed in 1754-55, roughly at the same time as the same-named highly regarded work by Carl Heinrich Graun. Both pieces are settings of the same libretto by Karl Wilhelm Ramler. In this late work, Telemann consciously contrasts the carefully crafted recitatives with musically reduced solemn choruses to obtain an emotional reading of the Passion text. This vocal score complements the Urtext score of this moving passion oratorio which is published as part of the “Georg Philipp Telemann Musical Worksâ€. The complete orchestral material is available on hire.

The ambitious late work of Georg Philipp Telemann, consciously dedicated to vocal composition, begins with the Donner-Ode (1756/1760). As a symbol thunder represents the forces of nature, here in close connection to the traumatic earthquake of Lisbon in 1755. The characteristic arrangement of the vocal parts and the scoring with three trumpets, the soloistic use of the timpani and instrumental ensemble made this avant-garde work popular and well known already during the composer's lifetime. The new edition presented here takes into consideration important, newly discovered sources such as the autograph of the first part. Score available separately - see item CA.3914200.
