The Gibbons Hymnal contains the 17 hymn tunes composed by Orlando Gibbons for George Wither's The Hymnes and Songs of the Church (1623), many of which are still popular today. This is the first modern edition which incorporates Wither's hymn texts beyond the first verses. Gibbons composed treble and bass lines for the hymns - editor David Skinner has constructed the inner voices to create a collection of pieces that can be performed either as hymns or as simple anthems. SATB and organ Stanford's Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis in F was written in 1872, while the composer was a choral and organ scholar at Queens' College, Cambridge. Though early in date, the work already shows his remarkable talent for composition and his gift for writing large-scale choral music. Edited by Ralph Woodward, a latter-day organ scholar of Stanford's old college, the setting is entitled The Queens' Service to distinguish it from the more well-known service in the same key. Description Edward Elgar’s The Dream Of Gerontius is a splendid oratorio for Mezzo-soprano, Tenor and Bass with Chorus and Orchestra. The composer was drawn to the beautiful stillness and sadness of the poem by Christina Rossetti, which transcends its rigid sonnet structure, and allude via the epigraph to the mysterious Willow-Wood cycle by Christina's brother Dante Gabriel Rossetti. The music suggests a division of the poem into three stanzas, alternating with tranquil interludes (using the opening melody) representing the 'willow-wood' of the title, so that the listener is constantly reminded of the gentle surroundings. As the intensity of the text increases, so does the astringency of dissonance in the verses, reaching its apogee just before consonance breaks through at the crucial phrase 'onemoment joined'. The simplicity of the Vocal writing conveys the serenity of the setting, while simultaneously suggesting the austere melancholy of the lovers. The 'Petite Messe solennelle? is the finest work of Rossini's late years. He composed it between 1863 and 1864 at the age of 71 as a commission for Countess Louise Pillet -Will for the consecration of her private chapel, where the work received its first performance in March 1864. Together with the 'Stabat mater?, the mass is one of the composer's mostimportant sacred works.The unusual instrumentation with two pianos and harmonium is entirely in keeping with the Neapolitan keyboard tradition of the 18th century which was cultivated in France in Rossini's day. It forms a distinct contrast to the style of large-scale sacred compositions as written by, for example, Liszt and Bruckner. This setting of the opening to Psalm 102 was composed in the early 1680s. Purcell, who was in his early twenties, had succeeded John Blow as organist of Westminster Abbey around the beginning of the decade and his star was in the ascendant as a court composer. In this piece he pulls off a remarkable compositional coup: a single, gradual climax, lasting over two minutes and culminating on the final repetition of the word 'come', is achieved through a sublime, freely developing eight-part weave of the opening material. The harmonies and nbsp - that result from the chromatic inflections on the word 'crying' all serve the mounting tension in this extraordinary miniature. Study of the autograph manuscript suggest that this anthem was intended to be the opening part of a larger work which was never completed. / SATB
