Par SPARKE PHILIP. This is an ancient Welsh air that was first published in Relics of the Welsh Bards in 1794. Dafydd (David) Owain was a famous Welsh bard who lived on a farm called Gareg Wen (The White Rock) in Eifionydd, Carnarnvonshire, North Wales. Tradition has it that on his deathbed he called for his harp and composed this lovely melody, requesting that it be played at his funeral. Accordingly, it was later played at the parish church of Ynys-Cynhaiarn. Lyrics were later added by Ceiriog Hughes, which describe the melody's inspiration. Par VAN DER ROOST JAN. In the course of the two centuries following the death of Henry Purcell in 1695, no British composer of any statue was apparent. Consequently, the break-through of Edward Elgar (1857-1934) as an internationally known and respected composer at the end of the last century, was of considerable importance. As a composer Elgar was largely self-taught and he looked towards the continent for his inspiration. He is without doubt on par with his contemporaries such as the somewhat younger Richard Strauss. The Belgian composer Jan Van der Roost is a genuine admirer of Elgar’s music and on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the composer’s death in 1984 he composed the “CeremonialMarch”. Van der Roost was inspired by the most famous and frequently played works from Elgar’s catalogue of works, the characteristic “Pomp and Circumstances” marches, and decided to add his own, sixth march to the existing collection. / Niveau : 5 / Marche / Répertoire / Fanfare

Cette marche de concert, techniquement peu exigeante, est accessible à un grand nombre de formations. Le choix de l’instrumentation permet également aux petits ensembles de l’interpréter avec un rendu tout aussi homogène. Par SPARKE PHILIP. La plupart des pays ayant institué la tradition des musiques militaires ont développé un style de marche caractéristique. Ainsi, il est relativement aisé de distinguer une marche américaine d’une marche militaire française ou une marche allemande d’une marche espagnole. À l’intérieur du cadre structurel rigide d’une marche, on réussit à percevoir même les plus subtiles différences de rythme, d’harmonie et de tempo qui caractérisent les traditions de chaque pays. Il existe un, ou plus exactement deux styles de marche typiquement anglais : celui des marches militaires représenté par des compositeurs tels que Kenneth J. Alford, et celui des marches cérémonielles ou de concert quiatteindra l’excellence avec les marches orchestrales d’Elgar et Walton, entre autres. Royal Salute (“Salut royal”) est une marche de difficulté moyenne qui perpétue cette grande tradition.
