As indestructible as Rachmaninoff's c-sharp-minor Prélude (HN 1211) may be, it is not his only Prélude to have begun a 'solo career? of its own: with its rousing rhythms and rhapsodic middle section, the famous piece in g minor certainly takes its place among them. Pianists who aren't yet ready to tackle the complete cycle of 24 Préludes (available as HN 1200) can still enjoy Rachmaninoff 'at his best? with this work. In conjunction with Moscow's Glinka Archives, we were able to consult the autograph sources for our Urtext edition of the Préludes, which means that this single edition thus also benefits from the Urtext's excellent editorial and graphic quality. With his Etudes-Tableaux Rachmaninoff continued down the path that Chopin and Liszt had already set out on with their concert etudes: the most demanding technical tasks are presented in the form of expressive character pieces. Rachmaninoff composed two cycles, each originally with nine Etudes-Tableaux- however, shortly before Opus 33 went to print, he removed three of the pieces. Several posthumous editions later reversed this decision. However, in our edition we follow the exact structure with six pieces as laid out by Rachmaninoff for publication. The two surviving etudes that were not originally published are reprinted in an appendix to our Urtext edition. / Piano

From an earlier Belwin Mills edition, this is Volume 5 of a series of the piano works of the great Russian-American composer. Included are Rachmaninoff's Opus 28 and Opus 36 Sonatas. The Opus 28, in D-minor, in three movements, was completed in 1907 and was introduced in Dresden, Germany. The Opus 36, in B-flat minor, also in three movements, was written and 1913 but was later revised by the composer.
