Après le grand succès de la Greek Folk Song Suite qui dure depuis plus de vingt ans, Franco Cesarini se mesure à nouveau à la longue et riche tradition de la musique folklorique grecque. Sa Greek Folk Song Suite No. 2 élabore trois dances qui donnent le nom aux trois mouvements de la pièce. Le premier mouvement, Samiotissa, est un kalamatianos, dont la caractéristique la plus distinctive est le rythme irrégulier en 7/8. C'est une danse festive, considérée aujourd'hui comme la danse nationale grecque dont les racines remontent à l'Antiquité. Le deuxième mouvement, Kato sto jalo, est un zeibekiko, une danse au rythme lent dansée par un seul homme à la fois qui est apparemment né parmi les guerriers de l'ancienne Anatolie. Chasaposerviko, le troisième et dernier mouvement, est la partie rapide de la danse hasapiko et se caractérise par sa forme plus étendue. Par SPARKE PHILIP. Reflections on an Old Japanese Folk Song est basé sur la mélodie Suiryo-Bushi, qui est issue de la tradition de shamisen. L’oeuvre commence par deux versions différentes de la mélodie, suivies par plusieurs variations sur le thème enentier ou en partie, chacune dans son propre style. The melodies, harmonies, moods and rhythms of Norwegian folk songs and dance (even the sounds of Norwegian folk instruments) permeate the music of Edvard Grieg (1843-1907). After studying in Leipzig and Copenhagen he returned to Norway and a chance meeting with Norwegian nationalist Rikard Nordraak ignited his interest in folk music and laid the foundation for his compositional style. His most famous orchestral works are the Piano Concerto (1868) and the incidental music to Ibsen’s play Peer Gynt (1875). Par BALAZS ARPAD. Árpád Balázs (*1937) composed the first version of the work between 1994 and 1996 for tárogató and concert band. Since this traditional Hungarian instrument is rarely found in ensembles abroad, a soprano saxophone can serve as an alternative solo instrument. The composer uses melodies from the early 18th century, from the age of Rákóczi's war of independence. An ambitious framework is given to the work by the reminiscing, solemnly flowing brass chorus, which is built of the motives of the folk song Oh, Rákóczi, Bercsényi (Hej, Rákóczi, Bercsényi). As a contrast serves then Panna Czinka's ancient ''violin lament''. Following this, in a pierced-work-like fashion, the folk song The dew of green forest (Zöld erdo harmatát) comes in, then, as the culmination of the work, the well-known, wild Kuruc dance of Csínom Palkó appears.
