Par PROKOFIEV SERGEI. The Russian ballet director Sergei Diaghilev commissioned many composers to write music for the theatre. This was what caused Serge Prokofiev to compose the four part Scytische Suite (also known as Ala and Lolli) in 1916, from which The Enemy God and the Dance of the Spirits can be heard on this CD. This suite is one of Prokofiev's first works, and received negative criticism following its first performance on account of its being 'uncivilised'. Prokofiev himself wrote after this first performance '. . . The timpani player beat the skin of the timpani to tatters, and the whole orchestra voiced a protest. A cellist complained that he only put up with the violence, createdby the blaring brass, on account of his sick wife and three children. . . Arr. Tohru Takahashi. Par MUSSORGSKY MODEST. Compositeur essentiellement autodidacte, Modest Moussorgski (1839-1881) descend d’une famille aisée de la noblesse russe. Son chef-d’oeuvre lyrique Boris Godounov est basé sur la tragédie d’Alexandre Pouchkine, dans laquelle Boris Godounov, tsar autoproclamé et soutenu par le peuple faillit à son rôle. En 1896, l’opéra connaît le succès dans une version retouchée par Rimski-Korsakov. La version originale de Moussorgski contient cependant des idées uniques, des détails harmoniques, mélodiques et instrumentaux innovateurs. To conclude our Godzilla show, Mike Story opens with a powerful theme that gives way to a short trumpet solo, followed by a quiet section featuring wistful chords in the woodwinds and mallets. Par COLERIDGE-TAYLOR SAMUEL. Samuel Coleridge-Taylor\'s Christmas Overture appeared posthumously in 1925. Originally orchestrated by Sydney Baynes, it features God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen and Hark the Herald Angels Sing. It is thought by some to have been put together from incidental music he wrote for a children\'s play called The Forest of Wild Thyme. This suite was composed by Jan Van der Roost on the occasion of the 110th anniversary of the ‘Koninklijke Sint Martinusfanfare’ (Royal Saint Martinus Fanfare Band) from Halle (Belgium). The composer was required to create a suite in three movements based on three images associated with the ‘Sint Martinusfanfare’ from the small town of Halle in the province of Brabant. The first movement (Andante Pomposo) describes Martin, a soldier in the Roman army. In Andante Moderato we see the image of Martin, who become a Christian and chooses to devote his life to God. In this movement, the composer was inspired by the Brabantine gothic art of the Sint Martinus Basilica in Halle. Thecontrast between the dark Basilica and the statue of Our Lady between the soaring pillars will vividly come to life for audiences of this descriptive piece. The final movement, Allegro Molto Vivace’, could have been an image for a frivolous peasant in the Halle carnival. In a triptych about St. Martin it is more fitting to refer to it as an apotheosis, the crown on the pastoral work of Martin, Bishop of Tours, Patron Saint of the Fanfare Band and the Basilica of Halle. / Niveau : 4 / Pièce de concert / Répertoire / Fanfare

O Take My Hand, Dear Father. Par SILCHER FRIEDRICH. This celebrated song is based on a poem by Julie Hausmann (1826-1901), a Latvian teacher who was probably blind. The text draws on her personal experience and unshakeable faith in God, death and eternal life. The melody by Friedrich Silcher is written in a simple and delicate style but also draws on the grand romantic tradition of Wagner and Bruckner.
