21 Etudes for Violoncello. ?More than 20 years ago I was called upon by friends, artists, and aficionados to write about fingerings for the violoncello,? then-famous Berlin cellist Jean-Louis Duport thus opens his ?Essai? from 1806, dedicated to ?Professeurs de Violoncelle?. His methodology revolutionized cello technique, and the 21 etudes printed in its appendix are still regarded today as perhaps the most important set of studies for all budding cellists. Modelled after the volumes of etudes for violin, Henle is also issuing the Urtext here, together with all original fingerings and bowings, while also offering alternatives by the famous cellist and teacher Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt. This edition also offers a second cello part provided by Duport for accompaniment.

Nos 14-21-The modern method of 'cello playing dates only from about the last third of the eighteenth century. While the great Italian masters had developed the art of the violin before the end of the seventeenth it remained for the Frenchman Jean-Louis Duport to bring order and system into the method of the 'cello. As a continuation of Book 1 these etudes are written to improve finger agility and bowing technique for the intermediate to advanced cellist.This edition of Duport’s Etudes has been edited and fingered by Leo Schulz.

Franz Schubert’s Sonata in A minor D. 821 was originally written for piano and arpeggione an instrument of the 1820s combining features of the guitar and the cello. This instrument was in use for just a short period of time so that the composition has now become standard repertoire for cello and piano and this is the version presented here. A handwritten violin part in the hand of Anton Diabelli kept by the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris however shows that the sonata’s arpeggione part was initially arranged for violin long before the first print in 1871 introduced the well-known version for cello and piano. WienerUrtext also publishes Diabelli’s arrangement for violin and piano in a separate edition. Both editions are essentially based on Schubert’s autograph the cello part in principle relies on the first printed edition of 1871 the violin part is based on Diabelli’s arrangement.
