A 'hayashi' is a group of performers who provide musical accompaniment for Japanese Noh or kabuki theatre. In Noh, they are purely instrumentalists; the type of instruments featured and the order in which they sit on stage follow established practices. The leftmost performer plays a small taiko, set on a stand before him, with two drumsticks. To his right is the ōtsuzumi hip drum, followed by the kotsuzumi shoulder drum, and the Noh flute. In kabuki, a number of shamisen players are added, along with, depending on the play, taiko drums of various sizes, various types of flutes, and other instruments, including a myriad of devices for sound effects. In 1941, I was invited by Viktor Vaszy to take on a choice double role, as a teacher of composition at the Cluj Conservatory as well as chorus master at the Cluj National Theatre. For me, this meant both an official state appointment and a substantial increase in my income. At the time I was over 35 years old and still without a permanent post. I took up my new duties at the end of the summer. My wife and I felt very much at home in Cluj but the most important for me was that along with my artistic obligations I found time to compose. Unfortunately we do not know why Farkas wrote in 1992 a new version of the Three Burlesques for clarinet quintet and for whom it was intended. The first movement Allegro, arc shaped, is more a succession of rhythmic patterns than melodies, with hectic ostinatos and staccato chords. In the middle of the movement, a short figure, like a second theme, brings a bit of calm and gentleness. The second movement, an expressive Moderato comodo and the final Allegro are shorter and also contrast with staccato chords.

Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring is the most common English title of the 10th and last movement of the cantata 'Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben', BWV 147 (Heart and Mouth and Deed and Life), composed by Johann Sebastian Bach in 1716 and 1723. Today, it is often performed at wedding ceremonies as well as during Christian festive seasons like Christmas and Easter, slowly and reverently. This is, however, in contrast to the effect suggested by Bach in his original scoring for voices with trumpet, oboes, strings, and continuo. The music's wide popularity has led to numerous arrangements and transcriptions such as the present one for clarinet octet or choir by Prof. Hideaki Iwai.

Giovanni Gabrieli was an Italian composer and organist of the late Renaissance and early Baroque periods. He was born in Venice, where he trained as a musician and composer, initially studying with his uncle, Andrea Gabrieli, who was a prominent musician and composer in the city. Gabrieli's Sacrae Symphoniae is a collection of sacred instrumental music that was published in Venice in 1597 which includes canzonas, sonatas, and motets, all of which were composed for the unique acoustics of St. Mark's Basilica in Venice. The Sacrae Symphoniae is an important work in the development of instrumental music, as it represents a shift away from vocal music and towards the use of instruments in sacred music. The collection features a range of different instrumental combinations, including brass, strings, and organ, and often employs multiple choirs or groups of instruments to create a rich, complex sound.

Patrick Hiketick is a Belgian pianist and composer. As a composer he worked for nearly all theatre companies in Flanders and he wrote over a 100 different theatre plays, amongst which the complete oeuvre of Molière and Shakespeare. He was also the musical director for all Brecht plays for KNS theatre in Antwerp, where he worked as the home composer for 10 years. He than became the musical coordinator for the Royal Ballet of Flanders and he wrote several ballet compositions for symphony orchestra. He has his own close-harmony and jazz trio, and he works freelance as a composer and as artistic director in several musical productions. He composed many clarinet works for the Flanders Clarinet Quartet, and was honoured in Japan with concerts completely dedicated to his works. 'Turning Point' is a clarinet octet (or choir), dedicated to the Kansai Clarinet Ensemble conducted by prof. Hideaki Iwai.
