Cette ouverture est une œuvre de commande pour la Pfarrkapelle Schwarzenbach en Allemagne à l?occasion du 50e anniversaire de sa création. Le titre anglais dérive du nom allemand Schwarzenbach signifiant littéralement « ruisseau noir » [de schwarz « noir » et Bach « ruisseau »]. Cette pièce fluide et légère est un hommage à toutes les associations musicales qui continuent d?exister dans de nombreux villages en dépit de la vaste diversité de l?offre dans le domaine des loisirs actuels. Par BALAZS ARPAD. With its energetic impetus and brilliant instrumentation, Concertino is outstanding in the oeuvre of Árpád Balázs. Among his compositions for concert band, it is by far the most engaging and demanding work. Passing away and a will to live are simultaneously present in Concertino, which Árpád Balázs composed in memory of his beloved father. Its structure brings Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsodies to mind. Its solemn opening (which returns at the end) is followed by a slow and a fast movement- the funereal music of the slow movement evolves from a motif from Bach's St. Matthew Passion which intensifies in a manner similar to the lament in Grieg's Peer Gynt. The pulsing timpani is featured significantly at the beginning and the end of the funereal music. The fast movement represents resolution, resignation, and regained gaiety. This part, pulsating like a waltz and echoing the modulation technique of Richard Strauss, is followed by the solemn return of the opening chords. The name of Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) is inextricably connected to the German city of Leipzig. This modest and very dutiful master composer worked like a diligent civil servant. From 1723 until his death in 1750 he was cantor of the Thomaskirche in Leipzig. Since the beginning of the 20th century the Bach Festival takes place in this city every year. The hallmark of Leipzig is internationality: every year soloists come from far and near to perform the baroque music again. The Bach Festival inspired the Dutch composer Henk Hogestein to write Memories of Leipzig which is based on a theme from one of Bach’s arias.

(The Four Seasons)-Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741) stands with Handel and J.S. Bach as one of the titanic figures of late Baroque composition. Not only was he lauded as a composer of vocal and instrumental works both sacred and secular he was without serious competition the most prolific composer of his age. In addition to hundreds of vocal works includingforty-nine operas he composed five hundred concertos. The Four Seasons are probably the best known of his concerti with the second movement Largo portraying time spent by a roaring firelistening to the rain pounding against the window.This new arrangement for concert band retains allthe warmth of the original.

Par DE HAAN JACOB. This composition is based on a passacaglia theme, in which artistic perfection, symphonic drama and oriental melody lines play a role. The passacaglia is originally a dance made up of a series of variations above a bass line constantly present as an ostinato. It is not in this sense that the 'Symphonic Variations' are in the passacaglia form but in the sense of the open form of the variations. Jacob de Haan, himself originally an organist, took his inspiration for this piece from the famous passacaglia for organ in C-minor by J. S. Bach. Following the introduction of the passacaglia theme (in the bass) the entry by the trumpets and trombones forms the majestic start to amusical adventure, in which this theme (often fragmentary) returns in variations. Then there follow two faster movements with dramatic contrasts and virtuose passages. Particularly striking here is the use of two characteristic intervals from the beginning of the theme namely the minor second and the augmented fourth. An apause in the composition comes in the slow bridge where a syncopated bourdon (perfect fifth) is constantly repeated. The tension grows in dynamics and harmony, and the oriental-flavour becomes obvious in the melody. We arrive at a faster movement via an accelerando, in which a perpetuum mobile based on the passacaglia theme is central. Finally the whole flows into a martial theme, in which the ostinato accompaniment n the descant derives from the passacaglia theme. / Niveau : 5 / Pièce de concert / Répertoire / Concert Band

A saxophone feature based on the Passion Chorale-Cette mélodie intemporelle de Hans Leo Hassler (1564-1612) est devenue célèbre après avoir été intégrée dans la Passion selon saint Matthieu de Jean-Sébastien Bach dans des harmonisations particulièrement riches. Elle est généralement accompagnée du texte O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden (Chef couvert de blessures) du pasteur et poète allemand Paulus Gerhardt. Les saxophones altos et ténors développent dans un premier temps un contrechant lyrique sur la mélodie du cantique puis réexposent la mélodie originale sur une partie obligée proche de l?art de Bach et jouée par les bois évoluant dans les registres aigus.

Poems by Graeme King-Le cantique Nun ruhen alle Wälder dont la ligne mélodique fut reprise par Jean-Sébastien Bach pour son choral So sein nun Seele deine (Choral n°6 - Cantate BWV 13) est le fil conducteur de cette oeuvre en quatre mouvements conçue comme un cri contre la destruction volontaire de la nature pour le profit. Plus de trois siècles nous séparent du temps de Bach. Si les mots sont restés les mêmes leur sens primitif connaît cependant quelques nuances. Ainsi au XXIe siècle - considéré comme le « siècle du progrès » il conviendrait de traduire Nun ruhen alle Wälder (?les forêts se reposent ?) par ?Les forêts se meurent?. La mondialisation et l?industrialisation massiveassociées à l?avidité prédatrice à la corruption politique aux actions humaines irrationnelles et au fossé grandissant entre riches et pauvres conduisent notre planète bleue à se rapprocher chaque jour un peu plus du point de non retour. Cette composition n?est pas une accusation acerbe mais plutôt une exhortation à prendre soin de cette beauté si harmonieuse que nous offre la nature. Et peut-être prendrons-nous enfin conscience de l?importance d?une situation de coexistence avec la nature nécessaire pour la survie de l?espèce humaine et non d?exploitation qui conduit à la destruction. Un jour alors qu?il naviguait sur Internet Marco Pütz découvrit l?oeuvre du poète australien Graeme King. Fasciné par la clarté de l?écriture et le rythme des vers Marco Pütz imagina les multiples possibilités d?adaptation et de mise en musique qu?offrent les poèmes de King. Il choisit quatre poèmes sur la nature pour créer son oeuvre Four Earth Songs (Quatre chants de la terre). 1. Tears of Nature (Les larmes de la Nature) 2. Grrrevolution 3. Stand up! (Levez-vous !) 4. Tomorrow (Demain) Four Earth Songs est dédié amicalement à l?Orchestre de Fanfare de Frise (Frysk Fanfare Orkest) et à son chef Jouke Hoekstra.
