Fanfare; Reminiscence and Celebration is in 2 movements. I. Fanfare The opening of a concert hall is always an exciting event, introducing the hall to the performers and the performers to the hall each testing the capacities of the other. I decided to have the ensemble greet and salute the new Ruby Diamond Hall with a Fanfare that includes offstage brass players in 3 different locations in the audience. II. Reminiscence and Celebration The 2nd movement begins in a reflective mood. As I thought about Ruby Diamond Hall, where I had performed as a teenager, I remembered people, particularly many mentors with whom I have performed here, who are gone, but whose gifts and spirits are still with us. The theater has a beautiful tradition of leaving one light bulb burning all night long for the spirits of the actors who have graced that stage. While I wanted my 2nd movement to acknowledge that sense of continuity of past and present, the piece ends in celebration of the new. Perhaps all artists feel a strong connection with the past, but we work in and for the present and we build for the future.Fanfare; Reminiscence and Celebration is in 2 movements. I. Looking Up, Moving On was commissioned by the Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra and was part of a tour programme they gave in May 2012, a tour which included many areas that had been devastated by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. The theme of the piece is the powerful ability of mankind to overcome such disasters and look forward to a positive future; it opens in an appropriately optimistic mood, featuring bright orchestral colours and extensive syncopation. A chorale-like fanfare is soon introduced on horns and euphonium, answered by chirpy woodwinds. The mood subsides until an alto saxophone introduces a brief quotation from the composer's The Sun Will RiseAgain, which was written to raise funds for victims of the 2011 disaster. The mood soon changes and the horns introduce a noble theme under woodwind flourishes. This leads to the main Vivo section of the piece which is characterised again by strong syncopations as part of a florid theme in the low woodwinds. This melody undergoes varied development by all sections of the band until the horn fanfare returns triumphally on the brass. This is extended and leads to a faster coda which brings together previous material in counterpoint to close the work in optimistic mood. Looking Up, Moving On is gecomponeerd in opdracht van het Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra.

When Hearts Tremble is an emotion packed piece dedicated to musician friends lost all to soon. This beautiful composition by Brant Karrick reflects on the fragility of human existence, joyous memories of loved ones and their effect on everyone around them, and maintaining hope for what the future will hold when all feels lost. This tour de force piece perfectly displays Karrick's polished compositional craft with impeccable scoring, beautiful melodic writing, and exceptional orchestrational color. While the day-to-day grind of our lives can be filled with overwhelming obligations, goals and commitments, it is sometimes very easy to forget just how precious and fragile life is . It is so easy to get caught up in our own personal feelings and worries that we sometimes don’t realize and appreciate the many blessings we have, especially friendships . On Wednesday, November 18, 2015 the Jefferson High School Band in Jefferson, Georgia lost two of its members to a fatal car accident . The victims were brothers . Music was a constant part of their lives, and the boys were talented percussionists in the marching band . To help with the grieving process the school and community commissioned this piece to celebrate the lives of William and Alex Trimble .As a father, I cannot imagine losing a child, let alone two, and beginning this piece was very difficult as I felt extreme anguish, especially for the parents . But it was decided the piece should primarily reflect the enthusiasm, youthful spirits and positive influence these two young men demonstrated as they were deeply loved by their band mates, community and family . There are four main themes, each representing the feelings and emotions that are certain to occur after a loss of loved ones . The first theme is a short, introductory fanfare, strong and bold, to stand for courage . A second dance-like melody features a liltingly mixed meter to portray a youthful and carefree innocence . This soon changes into a third more song-like, and stately theme intended to provide encouragement as we move forward through life .The middle of the piece includes a soft transition as two snare drummers give voice to the boys, allowing them to thank their friends and assuring them that it will be okay . This moves directly into a slow melody introduced by the saxophones (Alex, the younger brother was also a saxophonist) and is a time for reflection and allows for feelings of sadness at losing beloved friends . However, a second statement of the same theme, now at full volume with a strong percussion cadence, intends to lift the spirits and allows all friends to unite in joyous celebration of life . Both the enthusiastic dance theme and stately lyrical theme return, now in different keys, and work their way toward the highly energetic burst of glorious sound in the short and wild coda . When Hearts Tremble was written to celebrate the joys of youth and life, and should remind us that our friends and loved ones are precious, and we should live each day to bring more joy into the world and into the lives of others .

Diamond Concerto was commissioned by Musikverein Morschied from Germany - Dr. Eric Grandjean, conductor - for a special concert featuring Steven Mead as guest soloist. Together they gave the world premiere on 28th April 2012 in the town theatre of Idar-Oberstein.The commission is a highlight in the 30-year friendship between composer and soloist, which has included many mutual CD projects and concerts and, now, a concerto. Sparke had Steven Mead's special euphonium sound in his head throughout the composition process and made free use of the variety of styles which the world-renowned virtuoso has made his own during his highly successful solo career. The village ofMorschied lies to the west of Frankfurt am Main in the area known as the German Road of Precious Stones, which is famous for its thriving gem industry. Because of this it was decided to give the commission a local connection by choosing the title, Diamond Concerto. Each of the three movements is named after a famous diamond:1 EARTH STARis rather stern in mood, opening with a free fantasy for the soloist over a static chord from the band. This leads to an Allegro Moderato in minor mode where small motives are gradually repeated and developed by both band and soloist.2 OCEAN DREAMuses a varied quote from the composer's Music for Battle Creek, including a melting slow melody that was originally written with Steven Mead in mind.3 BLUE HEARTwas written, at Steven Mead's suggestion, in bebop style and takes the form of a jazz waltz. The quasi-improvisatory central section features a call-and-response passage for the soloist and upper woodwinds.Soloist: Difficulty 6Diamond Concerto is available for euphonium and piano (AMP 374-401) as well as for euphonium and brass band (AMP 354-030). Like the Eagle, We Soar and Rise was commissioned by Yuying Secondary School Concert Band and Yuying Alumni Association for the 2010 centenary of the school’s foundation. The piece was named by a friend of the composer named Steven Phua, who originally suggested commissioning a new piece to Satoshi Yagisawa. The piece furthermore takes its name from the text of the Yuying Secondary School song. This composition is based on three different concepts: the first one demonstrates ‘The founders’ passion for education’; the second concept illustrates ‘Hardship in war time’; the third one ‘To the future’ describes the inner strength people find to overcome struggles. Thispiece concludes with a fanfare, which is the sound of hope that leads to a brighter future in a positive direction. The world premiere of this piece was conducted by Faizal Bin Othman, who is one of the leading educators in Singapore, and was performed by the Yuying Secondary School Concert Band.

Sinfonia Hungarica is a three-movement symphony that depicts the history of Hungary. All three movements were inspired by historical key figures, wars, and other important events from this country. This symphony is a celebration of Hungary’s millennium in 2001.The final movement is named after ISTVAN, the King who introduced Christianity into Hungary and who was crowned by Pope Silvestro II on January 1, 1001. A rather solemn start leads to another war-like passage, ending with some loud crashes. This symbolizes the fact that the body of the pagan Koppany was cut into four pieces, and sent to the four castles of the country as an example. After a quiet, almost religiousintermezzo, the National Hymn of Hungary is introduced. This broad “grandioso†ending also has a symbolic meaning: after ten centuries, Hungary has many reasons to look back on the past with pride, and to look forward to the future with optimism and confidence. This thought-provoking book contains seven high-level exchanges between a leading wind band practitioner and a music education philosopher. Each section of The Future of the Wind Band grapples with the most profound issues facing the music education profession and the path of instrumental music education in our schools: Relevance: What relevance, if any, does the wind band have both to today’s students and to culture more broadly in the twenty-first century? What relevance does the band experience hold for students’ everyday life? Repertoire: What is the relationship between the repertoire performed by wind ensembles and the larger musical world? Pedagogy: What constitutes best practice in terms of musical pedagogy and rehearsal technique within the large-ensemble experience? Creativity: Can the wind band function as a vehicle for enhancing the individual creativity of its members? Economic Justice: How do issues of social class and the distribution of wealth relate to broader questions of social justice within the context of instrumental music education? Professional Ethics: What are the primary ethical responsibilities of the wind band conductor? Democratic Citizenship: What relationship, if any, can be drawn between membership in the wind band and citizen participation in democracy? Such exchanges can only strengthen our profession and pay rich dividends in our musical and educational work with the students we serve. Editor of this book, William (Bill) M. Perrine is Associate Professor of Music and Director of Instrumental Activities at Concordia University in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he directs the wind ensemble, marching band, and community orchestra.

Philip Sparke's The Saga Of Haakon The Good for Brass Band. Score and parts. The Saga of Haakon the Good reflektiert das Leben von Konig Haakon I von Norwegen (um 920-961). The Saga of Haakon the Good war bereits Pflichtstück bei den British National Brass Band Championships 2008. Wahrhaft meisterlich!

The young have the future. This is the statement made at the beginning of ‘Like a Child’ by Andreas Ludwig Schulte. The opening radiates strength and ambition, but one is also made to wonder which direction will be chosen, which choices will have to be made. After the introduction the first steps on the path of life are taken, still somewhat unsteadily (the 3/4th time used illustrates this uncertainty). However, the child has now set off and will meet the future with an open mind, unafraid, even though experience will teach it how easily it can be hurt.Fortunately, it is sometimes allowed to be vulnerable and it discovers there will always be someone to offer shelter, support and love. (Adagio) The last part breathes a far greater independence. Youth is able to face the future, it can even take on the whole world!

The piece traces key events in the life of Haakon the Good, later to become King Haakon I (ca. 921-960), who had been fostered by King Athelstan of England as part of a peace agreement made by his father (The Future King). The English king brought him up in the Christian religion and, on the news of his father's death, provided him with ships and men for an expedition against his half-brother Eirik Bloodaxe, who had been proclaimed king of Norway. On his arrival he travelled north (The Journey to Trondheim), where he began to gain the support of the landowners by promising to give up the rights of taxation his father had previously claimed. Elrik's sons allied themselves with the Danes, but were invariably defeated by Haakon, who was successful in everything he undertook except in his attempt to introduce Christianity to the country (The Missionary King), which aroused an opposition he did not feel strong enough to face. One of his most famous victories was The Battle of Rastarkalv (near Frei) in 955. By placing ten standards far apart along a low ridge (to give the impression his army was bigger than it actually was), he managed to fool Eirik's sons that they were outnumbered (the ten standards are represented by ten loud chords that begin in m. 420). The Danes fled and were slaughtered by Haakon's army.

The piece traces key events in the life of Haakon the Good, later to become King Haakon I (ca. 921-960), who had been fostered by King Athelstan of England as part of a peace agreement made by his father (“The Future King”). The English king brought him up in the Christian religion and, on the news of his father's death, provided him with ships and men for an expedition against his half-brother Eirik Bloodaxe, who had been proclaimed king of Norway. This fantastic, stirring fanfare was written with the composer?s wish that the young musicians performing it would fly into the bright future like pheasants. The first part of the piece is a fanfare, which is suitable for opening ceremonies, and the second part is a lush chorale-like movement. Your band can perform both parts together or you could perform each one separately. This short opening work will start any concert in real style. Sinfonia Hungarica is a three-movement symphony that depicts the history of Hungary. All three movements were inspired by historical key figures, wars, and other important events from this country. This symphony is a celebration of Hungary’s millennium in 2001.The second movement focuses on ARPAD, the actual founder of the Hungarian State. It starts with an atmospherical passage, evoking his grandmother, Emese, who dreamt about his future destination. One of Arpad’s opponents, the Bulgarian Prince Zalan, was chased away after a fight.

This short but solemn overture was written on the occasion of the 110th jubilee of Harmonie Hautcharage, Luxembourg. It is an homage to Jean-Paul Frisch and his son Gérard (the present conductor), who each have been conducting theensemble for many years. Under their leadership, the band has developed and improved remarkably. The very first musical theme, presented during the introduction of this little overture, is based on the letters hidden in the namesJean-Paul and Gérard Frisch (in which h is considered b as it is in German), thus aiming the spotlight on both key figures in the history of Harmonie Hautcharage. After the rather stately intro, the allegro is more joyful andlighthearted, thus depicting the optimism of the many young players of the band. The end is exciting and energetic: it radiates positivity and belief in the future.
