Mozart was neither a flautist nor a harpist but his Double Concerto has become the best-known music for both these instruments. Now its musical text has been prepared for Henle by the star flautist András Adorján following the autograph score even in those passages where other editions make arbitrary changes. No less a musician than Robert D. Levin has added historically convincing cadenzas as editorial suggestions; the lean and euphoniousPiano reduction was prepared by the experienced arranger Jan Philip Schulze. Celtic music is in his blood for his ancestors were noted collectors of dance music manuscripts dating back to the 19th century. With many recordings to his credit he now offers his expertise to performers wishing to explore the rich culture of Irish and other Celtic music on a variety of instruments. ?World Music Celtic? presents material from the Irish Scottish Welsh Cornish and Breton traditions. It makes no great technical demands on the players but Tourish points out that notation of this music is often ?skeletal? hence it is important to gain a knowledge of theindividual traditions in question and naturally he offers plenty of information on performance practice. The collection spans three centuries from the blind bardic harpists of the 18th century to the international performers of the present day. Huilukonsertto. Par ENGLUND EINAR. Einar Englund?s (1916-1999) Flute Concerto (1985) is beyond dispute one of his greatest works. Its finest attributes are its rich melodic invention, colourful instrumentation and immediate message. Add to these its rewarding solo part, and the result is truly one of his best concertos ? and works. He himself did not hesitate to regard it as such. It was premiered in Helsinki on September 16, 1985, having been completed at Ljugarn on the Swedish island of Gotland at the end of June. The Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra was conducted by Leif Segerstam, and the soloist was the concerto?s dedicatee, Mikael Helasvuo. The Flute Concerto opens with a Ritornello in which the flute's playful, dance-like passages make sharp contrast with the orchestra's heroic stance. In the mellow Canzona which follows, the flute plays rhapsodically over repetitive orchestral figures. The work's 'action-packed' finale hints at parody in its military march-like opening, but also gives rein to the lyricism already familiar from the second movement.
