'Ma grand-tante s'appelait Valentine. Elle était née le 4 février 1888. A l'âge de 96 ans, elle se sentit fatiguée de vivre. Mais elle s'était fixée un but: devenir centenaire. A l'agonie peu avant ses 100 ans, elle revint à la vie pour demander: 'Combien de jours reste-t-il ?' Il restait six jours. Elle a murmuré: 'Je tiendrai. Je tiendrai'. Elle est morte le 4 février 1988. Pour son faire-part de décès, elle avait choisi ce verset de la bible: 'Elle a fait ce qu'elle a pu'. Avant de mourir elle avait brodé un drap à mes initiales. Je l'offris à mon ami Hervé, alors gravement malade, en souvenir de cette nuit, lointaine déjà, où il avait refusé de partager mon lit. Je l'invitai à dormir un peu avec moi. Et puis, j'aimais à croire qu'ayant été brodé par une femme devenue centenaire grâce à une volonté farouche, ce drap, auréolé de foi, lui transmettrait sa force' (Sophie Calle, Des Histoires vraies - Actes Sud).Le cri de l'étoffe n'est pas une illustration du texte de Sophie Calle. Sonata for Violin and Violoncello-Following the intoxicating sounds of La Valse the smaller scoring and modern musical language of Sonata For Violin And Violoncello were a shock. Yet this pioneering work has now become a permanent fixture onthe concert stage.To help the players two performance scores are provided in which the other instrument’s part is also given. Both parts are included in a marked and an unmarked version.Sonata For Violin AndVioloncello was composed by Maurice Ravel between between 1920 and 1922.

Fragment-Ludwig van Beethoven wrote his Duo For Violin And Violoncello whilst he was still in Bonn perhaps in 1792 the year he departed for Vienna. It is not known whether he completed his work as only thebeginning of a fast sonata movement has survived. It is on a page in a collection of sketch leaves that is today known as the ?Kafka Miscellany?. Robert D. Levin has completed this fragment in the same style and thus for the firsttime it is in a version that can be performed.This Henle Edition contains two performance scores of the lively showpiece thus guaranteeing an optimal duo experience. A welcome addition to the repertoire.
