Le Petit Negre was originally composed by Claude Debussy (1862-1918) in 1909. The purpose was to write a great work that could also played by children. Jan Merry made the piece even more accessible at the beginning of the 20th Century by arranging it for Flute and Piano. Le Petit Negre is marked Allegro and begins with a theme modelled on ragtime music a style which was very popular at the time of composition. Jazz influences the C major key signature 2/4 meter and upbeat features make for an exciting and accessible piece for all flautists and pianists. Merry's arrangement ofDebussy's Le Petit Negre is a thrilling addition to the repertoire.

Between the late 19th century and the early 1960s French music experienced a Golden Age during which the flute played a prominent role: this age-old instrument played by fauns and shepherds spun numerous arabesques whose sensuous contours seemed to celebrate ?the mysterious connections between nature and the imagination? Exploiting the Flute to its full potential  Fantaisie Italienne is an exciting and challenging addition to the advanced flautist's repertoire. From cadenza passages to a delightful 6/8 melody this piece by French composer Eugène Bozza (1905-1991) covers a huge variety of the Flute's possibilities. The piece begins with an emotional characterised cadenza covering a wide range. This leads dramatically into a 6/8 section accompanied by broken chords in the piano before ending with a quirky and lively 2/4 secton. Bozza's Fantaisie Italienne for Flute and Piano is not only symbolic but also includes exciting challenges making for an imperative performance piece in the Flute repertoire.

Initially composed in 1907 for Bass Voice and Piano Habanera by Maurice Ravel was transcribed for Flute and Piano for this edition. Based on a Cuban Contradanza it features a special habanera rhythm and is generally performed with sung lyrics. In this edition the Flute is a substitute for the voice. While composing this piece Maurice Ravel was also working on two works also with Spanish influence: 'The Spanish Rhapsody' and 'The Spanish Hour'. This edition which can be used for recitals and exams will enlighten Flute players. Maurice Ravel (1875-1937) is a French composer famous for hisImpressionist contributions. He wrote numerous pieces including 'Daphnis and Chloé' and the famous 'Bollero'.

The Concerto remains widely studied and performed on the Flute making it one of the most important Concerti in the instrument's repertoire. Concerto in G is in three movements; 1. Allegro maestoso 2. Adagio ma non troppo and 3. Rondo: Tempo di Menuetto. The first and last movements are in the tonic key whilst the second movement is in the subdominant key of D major. A Dutch flautist of the time Ferdinand de Jean commissioned Mozart for four Flute quartets and three Flute concerti. However thecomposer who famously disliked the Flute only completed three quartets and two concertos. Instead of composing a second concerto Mozart rearranged his Oboe Concerto with substantial changes for it to fit with the Flute. This edition of Mozart's Concerto in G includes cadences by virtuosos Taffanel Gaubert and Bozza making for an unmissable version of the famed work.

French composer and conductor Henri Tomasi (1901-1971) published Concertino for Flute in 1946. As with his other wind compositions Concertino was well-received by audiences. Tomasi was born in Marseille but his Father and Mother were originally from La Casinca in Corsica. Despite being pressured into musical studies by his parents Tomasi dreamed of becoming a sailor and during the summer he stayed with his Grandmother in Corsica where he learnt traditional Corsican songs. However in 1921 he began his studies at the Paris Conservatoire and went on to become a high profile composer and conductor.Tomasi did not forget his Corsican routes often incorporating themes of the songs he had learnt during the summers with his Grandmother into his compositions. Concertino for Flute and Piano Reduction is a highly unusual and modern work in three movements; 1) Cadence and Allegretto 2) Largo and 3) Finale. This Tomasi piece is suitable to advanced flautists providing an exciting alternative addition to the instrument's repertoire.

Les classiques de la flûte n°20 (transcr. Taffernel Gaubert Clerval)-The twentieth piece of the Flute Classics collection this edition of Orpheus Champs-Élysées Scene by Christoph Willibald Glück was transcribed by Paul Taffanel and Philippe Gaubert. This piece taken from the Champs-Élysées Scene (Acte II) in the Opera 'Orpheus And Eurydice' is divided into two main parts: Lento Dolcissimo and Piú Lento which are both repeated with the piece finishing on a Coda. This edition can be played by upper intermediate players or above and includes the scores for the Flute and for the Fluteand Piano. 'Orpheus And Eurydice' is the most famous work by Glück and is based on the myth of Orpheus.

Les classiques de la flûte n° 80 (transcr. Marcel Moyse)-Number 80 of the collection 'Classics for Flute' by Marcel Moyse Minuet Of Mr. Duport is a piece initially composed by Mozart and arranged for Flute and Piano accompaniment. The main theme starts with a Tempo di Minuetto which is then followed by four variations and a final part Allegro ending up with a Cadenza. Quite amazing this piece is difficult to play and will fit upper intermediate players. It is a great piece to listen to that would definitely work well in a concert or in a recital.

André Jolivet (1905-1974) established his love for composition from a young age. This remained throughout his life and he held the post of Professor of Composition from 1966-1970 at the Paris Conservatoire. Fantaisie Caprice for Flute and Piano was published in 1954 and remains highly regarded. Jolivet himself a cellist wished to explore composition for all instruments and therefore has a considerable number of works in all fields. The composer's style is also known for its spirituality and the desire to associate the everyday with the magical and the human with the universal. Jolivet draws on acoustics andatonality as heard in his Caprice Fantasy. The piece requires advanced skills due to its use of complex rhythms and exploited tonality. For all advanced flautists Jolivet provides an exciting alternative piece for the instrument's repertoire.

Divertissement composed by Raymond Gallois Montbrun is a piece for Flute and Piano.
