Par PART ARVO. 'Pari intervallo' was composed in 1976 on the occasion of the death of a friend and is dedicated to his memory. The basic musical material consists of two parts which move exactly parallel to each other, so that the interval between them is always the same- hence the title. Sadie Harrison's The Souls Of Flowers is for Piano duet (4 hands/ 1 Piano) and is dedicated to Alex Larson and Avery Allen. This lyrical duet began life as a solo Piano piece written for Waheed Amiri a student at the Afghanistan National Institute of Music in Kabul. The title refers to the Afghan’s love of flowers and to the summer gardens of Kabul which are resplendent with roses the country’s national flower. This duet version is dedicated with thanks to Alex and Avery who gave the work its premiere at the Hartt Community Division Suzuki Piano Ensemble Recital on Saturday November 19 2016 in the Alfred C. Fuller Music Center (F. Berkman Recital Hall) at the Hartt School University of Hartford Connecticut USA. Duration: c. 3 minutes.

Par TCHAIKOVSKI PIOTR ILITCH. The Nutcracker Suite is a piano arrangement of the concert version of the ballet of that name. Tchaikovsky used only part of the music for the ballet in the suite. The Overture, and the March which is the most important of the characteristic dances in the Suite, come from the first act of the ballet. The remaining dances originate from the second act. They are: The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, in which the leading part is, in the original composition, played typically by the celeste almost all the way through; the fiery Russian 'Trepak' which reminds us of Tchaikovsky's national origins; the Arab Dance tinged with a gentle melancholy; the Chinese Dance with its tripping ostinato rhythm; the graceful Dance of the Reed Flutes; and finally the longest piece in the Suite: the Waltz of the Flowers in which Tchaikovsky, writing in the penultimate year of his life, showed his musical affinity with Johann Strauss. Gregory Stone has transcribed these three selected preludes for one piano-four hands. For much of his life George Gershwin sought to integrate the worlds of jazz and classical music. These pieces are not jazz improvisations but they do show something of the style of his own playing. Gershwin had intended to compose a set of twelve a sort of jazz Wohltemperierte Clavier but his unexpected death from a brain tumour at the age of 38 prevented this. At least seven survive (others may have ended up as songs) and this set of three as published form a satisfying unit. The first opens with a blue-note riff which forms the basis of the first theme.Contrasting material follows making use of a distinctive repeated note figure then the first idea reappears in a quasi-orchestral climax. The second prelude shows a curious kinship with Chopin???s A minor Prelude with its eerie accompaniment and hypnotic melody. The third exploits a similar major/minor ambivalence but dextrous syncopation gives it driving rhythmic energy.

Morris Dance is a piece for Piano duet. First published in 1944 it was one of the many popular duets that the composer wrote partly for his own use and performance and partly for public benefit andenjoyment.Alec Rowley (1892-1958) was an English composer organist and teacher. As well as his frequent Piano recitals and broadcasts he gained renown through his large-scale works performed at the PromenadeConcerts but most of his compositions are miniatures and small-scale works appropriate for amateur forces. Having studied at the Royal Academy of Music he later taught at Trinity College London for nearly forty years.

Arrangement for Piano Fourhands-In the 19th century arrangements for Piano four-hands were usually versions which people played at home if the works could not be heard in concert. In cases such as these Brahms did not however just make functional versions butcreatively transcribed his works for the piano. As the composer he allowed himself greater freedom than arrangers for publishers did. In this form his arrangements greatly contributed to the success of his works in musical life inthe 19th century. It is on account of their creativity that Brahms’ arrangements have attracted new interest in musical circles over the last few decades.
