Tango Tzigane - Jealousy-Tango Jalousie (Tango Tzigane - Jealousy) - Jacob Gade's classic arranged for Piano Duet (four hands) by conductor Esther Bobrova Lange. From the Preface: It is a common misconception that Tango Jalousie (Tango Tzigane) was written for the movie ”Don Q”. The piece was also played at the movie premiere in Paladsteatret on September 14th 1925 but there was no jealousy-based drama in the movie. Nonetheless the melody was well suited to the Zorro legend in a Mexican setting. But in the book “Jacob Gade – et eventyr i musik” (a fairytale in music) by Jørgen GramChristensen one learns that in a 1956 interview Jacob Gade recounted the incident in 1925 which concerned him very much: “One day the magazines featured a dramatic description of a jealousy-based murder and the word “jealousy” stood for me as a title with which the music became more and more attached.”There are many different arrangements of “Tango Jalousie” but I have always found that there was a need for a piano four hands version of this wonderful piece. In the process of working out a piano four hands version I used the full orchestra score and made sure that the most essential orchestra parts were included. Also the melody parts and accompaniment are equally distributed between the primo and secondo parts. (Esther Bobrova Lange)

Cotswold Hill-Tune by Charles Wilfred Orr is a wonderful pastoral tune for Piano 4-Hands that evokes imagery of the English countryside where he spent most of his life. Originally a beautiful and effective piece for string orchestra it has been wonderfully and authentically arranged for Piano Duet with the composers approval by John Mitchell.

Piano Concerto no. 4 in c minor op. 44. Despite its unusual form - a structure with two sections, each comprising two movements that are to be played without interruption - this work from 1875 enjoyed great success from the start. In its balanced proportion of solo part to orchestra, it corresponds almost perfectly to the model of the ?symphonic concerto? and numbers among the most popular concerti by this French composer. For the first edition of 1877, no less a figure than Gabriel Fauré undertook the piano transcription of the orchestral part - an optimal basis for Johannes Umbreit?s piano reduction for the first Urtext edition ever of this work. As for the Piano Concerti no. 2 and no. 5 already issued by Henle, Pascal Rogé, one of the greatest experts on Saint-Saëns? piano works, also provided the fingerings for this edition.

This thoroughly entertaining set of arrangements from Mike Cornick is a must have for piano duettists. Perfect as encore items as the title suggests these pieces could of course be suitably placed anywhere in the concert programme. John Philip Sousa's The Liberty Bell will be happily recognised as the Monty Python theme music by many members of the audience and Abe Holzman's Blaze Away will set everyone's feet tapping. The rousing traditional Hebrew song Hava Nagila and the popular Billy Boy will have the audience's full attention as will the Radetzky March which is now a traditional encore for the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra's New Year's Day concerts. This flirtatious duet has energetic and vigorous rhythms but leans toward a light elegance with its modest dynamics. First published for string orchestra in 1883 Serenade became quite popular in France and was published forpiano duet in 1905. The composer Gabriel Pierne (1863- 1937) studied at the Paris Conservatory from age 8 until his graduation at age 19. His teachers included Cesar Franck (organ) and Massenet (composition). Audiences willenjoy hearing Serenade almost as much as the duet performers will love performing it!
