Jindrich Feld's Sonata for Alto Saxophone and Piano is frequently performed by virtuoso Saxophonists. Composed in 1989-90 the Sonata is elaborate and quirky and successfully exploits many extended techniques on the instrument. Born in Prague Feld (1925-2007) studied Violin and Viola with his parents before studying at the Conservatory and Academy of Music of his native city. His compositions predominantly instrumental soon became popular being performed all over the world. As reflected in his Sonata for Alto Saxophone and Piano Feld's style is deeply rooted in the Czechmusical tradition but he also integrated the main styles of 20th century Western music. The Sonata is made up of four movements 1. Allegro ritmico 2. Adagio/Bells of liberty 3. Allegro vivo/Scherzo and 4. Allegro con fuoco. Each movement of the Sonata presents different challenges from fast staccato semiquaver flourishes to the lyrical slurred passages. This Feld piece is highly virtuosic yet an excellent and enjoyable performance for all advanced saxophonists.

Sonata for Alto Saxophone and Piano by Edison Demisov was composed in1970 and covers three movements. The first part Allegro shows serialism; the second Lento focuses on new techniques; with the last one Allegro Moderato reminiscent of Jazz music. This strong>Sonata for Alto Saxophone and Piano dedicated to the French Saxophonist Jean-Marie Londeix was strongly influenced by Western European music and requires a certain level of ability (intermediate to advanced players) especially for the second movement. Edison Demisov (1929-1996) was a Russian Siberian-born composer specialising in alternative /non-conformist Soviet music. Strongly influenced by the West he was often criticised by his peers. He gained international recognition for the composition 'Le soleil des Incas' (1964) and wrote numerous concerti sonatas and other pieces.

Concertino Da Camera written in 1935 by Jacques Ibert (1890-1962) was a small concerto for alto-saxophone and eleven instruments: Flute Bassoon Oboe Horn Trumpet and Strings. This score is for Alto Saxophone and Piano. This Concertino is in two movements Allegro con moto and Larghetto РAnimato Molto is dedicated to the saxophonist Sigurd Rascher and is standing out for its large use of the Alto-Saxophone. It can be technically challenging and has a strong lyrical part. Its author Jacques Ibert (1890-1962) is a neoclassical composer who won the Prix de Rome in 1919. He composed manysymphonic suites operas and seven orchestras including Angelique (1926) and Divertissement (1930). He was also in charge of the Accad̩mie de France in the Villa M̩dicis (Roma) and was later administrator for the Paris Opera. This concerto has some similarities with his Flute Concerto (1934) also published by Alphonse Leduc.

Composed in 1949 the Concerto pour saxophone alto et orchestra by Henri Tomasi (1901-1971) was dedicated to Marcel Mule a renowned French Saxophonist. It was written as a Paris Conservatoire Contest piece and was performed by Mule himself in 1949. This publication is the Alto Saxophone and Piano adaptation of the Concerto. Written in two movements it begins with a secretive introduction leading to a cadenza that reminds of the introduction. It follows on the second part with an Allegro which finishes unexpectedly on an intense suite of fast notes to congregate on a strong Largo. Henri Tomasi is the French composer conductor and winner of the Grand Prix de Rome in 1927 He composed a variety of concerti (16) for Trumpet Violin Viola Clarinet Trombone Horn Oboe Flute as well as Ballets Orchestra Ballades and other pieces.

It was a genre to which he returned time and again throughout his life, from the Concerto for Cello and Orchestra of 1972 to the Double Concerto for Flute, Clarinet and Orchestra of 1996. In Denisov's music the role of the soloist, or rather the protagonist, is extraordinarily important, not so much for its virtuosity as for its confessional character. The solo part is a monologue distinguished by poetic diction and a very personal message from the composer. The dramaturgical conception of the Concerto for Saxophone and Orchestra, a reworking of the Viola Concerto of 1986, draws on traditional sonata form, thereby reaffirming the ubiquitous classicism in Denisov's thought. In this late work, we find all the typical features of his style: sinuous melodic lines layered into dense contrapuntal textures, and an interplay of orchestral colours, with pure sonorities contrasting with complex mixtures of sounds. It is a perfect dramaturgy that governs the evolution of the music to the very end. The first movement assumes the role of a sonata-allegro, with the standard formal sections of exposition, development, recapitulation and coda. The second movement is an Adagio for strings. The third takes the form of a little contrasting intermezzo that introduces both new thematic material and a new range of colours. Here tunefulness gives way to pointillism enriched with sonic effects. The only movement with a virtuosic solo part, its nervousness and inner tension set it worlds apart from the second and fourth movements that surround it. The fourth movement assumes the traditional form of a final set of variations. It is the dramaturgical and semantic heart of the concerto. The theme of the variations is Franz Schubert's Impromptu in B-flat major, op. 142, which in this case is 'born' from the celesta as the product of a dodecaphonic string cluster. This finale represents Denisov's homage to his great mentor, Schubert's music being for him a symbol of eternal and universal beauty. 'The attentive listener', Denisov stressed, 'will recognise that the Impromptu theme is already suggested very slowly in the course of the three preceding movements, not only thematically, but also psychologically. That's what makes the appearance of the Schubert theme sound so natural.' The variations relate to the variation genre less in their form than in their spiritual and conceptual metamorphoses. Pièce Brève is a piece for Saxophone and Piano by Rene Duclos. Written for upper beginners this really nice work is divided in three main parts: Allegretto Allegro Scherzando and Tempo 1: Allegretto with the third part being a variation of the main theme. This piece is really great for demonstrating the skills acquired as a beginner for a transition to the upper level and can also be played in a recital.

For Alto Saxophone and Piano. Par SAY FAZIL. Suite, consisting of six short pieces for alto saxophone and piano, is a virtuoso work for this duo. I composed my Suite in 2014 in commission of the legendary saxophone virtuoso Mr. Sugawa with whom I played the world premiere in Tokyo in 2014.
