Bagatelle was commissioned in 2016 by bass trombonist Jonathan Warburton as a companion piece to Pledge (2010). The piece is in A minor, and opens with a determined march-like theme shared by both instruments. The following section uses an ascending Dorian mode scale as its primary motif, before merging this theme with the opening march melody. The bass trombone and piano share equally important roles in the work. The piece is titled Bagatelle, as it is a short and unpretentious work. Shane Lamb's new work Bagatelle for Bass Trombone and Piano challenges both performers with different colors and expressive moods. About 4 minutes in length, this work is very appropriate for advanced intermediate performers. The range is modest and there is a muted section as well as a rubato cadenza-like section for the soloist.

The writing of Romanza and Scherzo was inspired by Charles Vernon, the legendary Bass Trombonist of the Chicago Symphony, who asked Mr. Pierce to write something for me with lots of melodies. The work is in three sections: a brief introduction followed by the very expressive Romanza and the final Scherzo, which is light and bouncy. The music is full of LOTS OF MELODIES, has a very large range and features a challenging cadenza. About 10 minutes in length, this music is appropriate for advanced performers. This work is dedicated to George Curran, Bass Trombonist of the New York Philharmonic who performs it on his new CD, Vital Signs, available on iTunes, CD Baby and from other distributors. Below is a brief sample of this beautiful work performed by Mr. Curran.

Pledge was commissioned for an all American composers concert in April 2010 during the Butler School of Music's Second Annual Research Week. The piece was inspired by the composer's own feelings regarding America as well as the reputation the country has acquired throughout the world. This piece questions where the nation will go from here, and what the future may hold for its citizens. To compose the Bass Trombone melody for the A section of the piece he set the text of the Pledge of Allegiance to music, resulting in a singing, syllabic style. The work (all in bass clef) is about 4 minutes in length and can be performed by intermediate (taking the lower octave option bars) to moderately advanced performers. The range of the Bass Trombone part goes from a pedal G to an optional high B-flat above the staff.

Composer John Frith has written a new solo virtuosic work for Bass Trombone with Piano accompaniment of about 3 minutes in length. Read below to see what his thoughts are about his composition for Jonathan Warburton. I have written a number of pieces (over many years) for Jonathan Warburton who also commissioned ‘Sons of Thunder' in 2015. Jon's gift for musical ‘acrobatics' gave me the idea of creating a short, high-energy work that would give vent to his exceptional range and flexibility. The central section is muted and relatively calm but it is not long before the music builds and the opening material returns. A solo cadenza creates a welcome calm interlude before the storm gathers once again as the piece builds to a momentous fortissimo before grinding to a thunderous halt!‘Sons of Thunder' is the nickname given by Jesus to the apostles James and John, possibly reflecting their lively characters……I'm guessing that theirs were not too unlike Jonathan's ebullient personality!.

Vocalise-etude (en forme de Habanera) was originally written for voice and is one more example of a French composer's fascination with the music of Spain. Ravel in particular was fond of this Habanera style, having included it in several of his works. This music also may have been composed as a study for students at the Paris Conservatory.Ravel includes virtuosic runs and portamento effects which Mr. Sauer has effectively used in his fine arrangement for Bass Trombone. The work of about 3 minutes in length is appropriate for advanced performers.
