Dvorák's Slavonic Dances utilise a strong and dramtic sense of rhythm throughout and he wrote original melodies rather than arranging known folk tunes. These dances have been a favourite with pianists and orchestras for generations. Spirited lively and full of musical interest the addition of these four dances to the brass quintet canon is a welcome supplement to that repertoire both as a complete set and as individual show fillers. Journey of the Lone Wolf tells the story of the hungarian composer Béla Bartók. It was commissioned by Dr. Nicholas Childs for Black Dyke Band who gave the first performance on Sunday 26 January 2014 at the Bridgewater Hall Manchester as part of the Royal Northern College of Music Festival of Brass. The composer's programme notes for each movement:1. Capturing the Peasants SongAfter the upheaval of moving to Budapest the young Béla Bartók meets Zoltán Kodály and the pair embark on summertime adventures throughout the Hungarian countryside to collect and catalogue the astonishingvariety (both harmonically and rhythmically) of gypsy and folk music heard in the Balkans. The arrival of WW1 plunges Bartók's beloved Hungary into chaos.2. Night MusicBartók was at times a cold man aloof and lonely. The odd moments of tenderness he showed are portrayed here in a series of evocative solos. His brief but intense affairs speak of a love he could only long for. Jazz is my night music and here there are hints of what Bartók may have heard in the USA later in his life.3. Flight and FightHaving been forced by the world's evils to leave his homeland of Hungary for America Bartók the anti-fascist felt isolated and angry. In this movement we hear his longing for a simpler time of gypsy folk dances as well as his maturity and depth as a composer finally exploring deeper colours and darker themes.

Musaic (1969) by Per NørgÃ¥rd - for Brass Ensemble and Electronics. Instr.: 5 Cornets 3 Trombones and Electronics Progamme Note Among my compositions for brass band three (“Backlight” “Massifs” - crystals - cascades” “Musaic”) all belong to a three-dimensional space. Thus “Massifs - crystals - cascades” was proclaimed from a mountainside towards the audience in the Norwegian town Tromsø and “Backlight” to the special room of the new concert hall at The Music Conservatory of Jutland Denmark.  “Musaic” was composed in 1969 for the inauguration of Edition Wilhelm Hansen’s new branch in Ã…rhus Jutland. Short movements for brass were intermittently heard on the street. In the concert hall all the movements were however heard - also the ones already played; by means of a continuous tape individual fragments of the ´street music´ were gradually collected into one concluding uninterrupted piece lasting all in all 10 minutes a mus(a)ic/muza(i)k…  A synthesis can be heard on a CD from 2007 (by the Brass Ensemble of The Royal Danish Conservatory Jutland) with the note that the work might be much longer when performed live.  Per NørgÃ¥rd (2007)  Parts available: KP01903A

August lebe lebe König from Cantata 207a-A Festive Tribute (?Hommage festif?) est le titre de cet arrangement du superbe chœur extrait de la cantate profane BWV 207 écrite par Bach en 1726 mais qui connaîtra un franc succès dans sa deuxième mouture intégrée dans la Cantate BWV 207a Auf schmetternde Töne der muntern Trompeten(?Résonnez éclatantes trompettes !?).Comme à son habitude Bach puise dans des œuvres antérieures. Ainsi à l?exception des récitatifs la Cantate BWV 207a reprend le tissu musical de la Cantate BWV 207 elle-même fortement inspirée des oncertos brandebourgeois La Cantate BWV 207a est une œuvre datée de 1735 et dédiée à Auguste III roi de Pologne et prince électeur de Saxe. Jean-Sébastien Bach a composé plusieurs œuvres pour le nouveau souverain en appui à sa candidature au poste de compositeur de la Cour titre honorifique qu?Auguste III lui accordera finalement en 1736.Si le texte de la cantate est un rien obséquieux la musique est festive et exploite les couleurs luxuriantes de l'orchestration. Bach joue des possibilités du grand orchestre avec trompettes hautbois d?amour et flûtes. Le chœur final August lebe lebe König ! (?Vive Auguste ! Vive le roi !?) nous révèle un Bach hautement cérémoniel.

Originally he seemed destined to follow in his father?s footsteps and thus sailed the oceans to countries as far apart as Iceland and Guinea. In 1476 his ship was sunk during a battle off the coast of Portugal. Columbus saved his own life by swimming to shore. In 1484 he conceived the idea of sailing to the Indies via a westward sea route but it was only in 1492 that he was able to realize this plan. On this first voyage he was in command of three ships: the flag-ship called the Santa Maria the Pinta and the Ni?a. From Spain Columbus sailed via the Canary Islands to the Bahamas whichhe sighted on October 12th 1492. Without being aware of it Columbus discovered the ?New World? ? he thought he had landed in the eastern part of Asia. The motif from Dvoøák?s 9th Symphony ?Aus der neuen Welt? forms a little counterfeit history at this point in the composition. After this first voyage Columbus was to undertake another three long voyages to America. These voyages were certainly not entirely devoid of misfortune. More than once he was faced with shipwreck mutiny and the destruction of settlements he had founded. After Columbus had left for Spain from Rio Belen in 1503 he beached his ships on the coast of Jamaica. The crew were marooned there and it was only after a year that Columbus succeeded in saving his men and sailing back to Spain with them. In the music the misunderstanding about which continent Columbus discovered in his lifetime resounds for does this part in the composition not contain Asiatic motifs? Poor Columbus! In 1506 the famous explorer died in Valladolid.

Six pulsating dances all fast in a variety of fascinating and irregular rhythms. A euphonium a piccolo trumpet and a variety of mutes are required for this Brass tentet arranged by Christopher Mowat.
