I Broke Off A Golden Branch was commissioned and first performed by the Schubert Ensemble in 1992. The words ‘I broke off a golden branch’ come from a Croatian folksong which is very obliquely referred to inthe second of the work’s two movements. Judith Weir dedicated this lovely piece of chamber music for Violin Viola Cello Double Bass and Piano to William Howard. Full score. Violin Viola Cello and Double Bass partsare included separately as well. Duration ca. 15 minutes.Judith Weir is a British composer and Master of the Queen's Music. In 1994 Weir received the Critics’ Circle Music Section Award for the mostoutstanding contribution to British musical life.

Here the fourths, springing from an entirely different expressive urge, shape themselves into a defi nite horn theme, spread themselves out architectonically over the whole piece, and place their stamp on everything that happens. Thus it turns out that they do not appear here merely as melody or as a purely impressionistic chord effect; their character permeates the total harmonic structure, and they are chords like all others.' (Arnold Schoenberg, Theory of Harmony, 1911) The Chamber Symphony Op.9 heralded a breakthrough in Schoenberg's compositional style. While the work did not go hand in hand with the complete destruction of the old tonal system it does show an extension in chordal and melodic constructions. It's focus on the interval of the fourth rather than the third is stated right at the start with the horn fanfare and this leads into the use of the whole tone scale soon after. These two elements open up a new sound space which he would explore further in the works to follow. Rabl?s Quartet in E-Flat Major won first prize in 1896 in a prestigious competition for young composers sponsored by the Vienna Tonkünstlerverein of which Johannes Brahms was honorary president and a judge of the competition. Brahms recommended the piece to his own publisher Simrock who released it the following year along with three other Rabl works: the Fantasy Pieces for Piano Trio Op. 2 and two sets of Four Songs Op. 3 and Op. 4. The Op. 1 quartet appears to be the first work ever written for that combination which was later more famously used by Messiaen in his Quatuor pour la fin du temps (Quartet for the end of time) composed in 1941.

Babette's Feast-Based on a story by Isak Dinesen (Karen Blixen) who also wrote Out of Africa the inspiration for the 1985 Academy Award winning film. Babette's Feast tells the story of Babette Hertsard (Stéphane Audran) a 19th century Parisian political refugee who flees on a boat to Frederikshavn in Denmark with the help of her nephew and her relationship with two elderly and religious sisters. The sisters Martina (named for Martin Luther) and Philippa (named for Luther's friend and biographer Philip Melanchthon) were the daughters of a pastor who had founded his own religious sect.

About a year later havingcompleted in the meantime the Horn Trio Opus 29 and the Cantata Opus 30 I turned back to the drafts of Marina and completed it on 10 September 1989. It is dedicated to the memory of my daughter who was murdered in Bavaria on 10September 1988.Marina is the heroine of Shakespeare’s Pericles a play remarkable for one of the most moving of all Shakespeare’s recognition scenes a dramatic situation which never failed to draw out his deepest expressionof feeling. This is the re-meeting of an ageing father with his long-lost daughter born at sea during the storm in which her mother is thought to have died and long believed to be dead herself. Eliot transforms the twocharacter’s mutual recognition into a transfigured mediation and surrounds it with a wealth of mainly marine imagery. In the words of Helen Gardener these images are: The prelude to a moment of ecstatic recognition. The voyagein Marina discovers in the ocean anisland and sees again a beloved face. Its theme is not the immortality of the soul but resurrection.

Par RHEINBERGER JOSEF GABRIEL. Rheinberger’s string quartets, his string quintet and his nonet for winds and strings were often performed and were very successful works during his lifetime. Their density, but also the delicateness of the scherzo movements are in the tradition of Schumann and Mendelssohn and these traits are combined with Rheinberger’s sense for the clear, defined structure of the movements and solid contrapuntal writing. The octet for winds and strings is published here for the first time and the nonet, which is actually a reworking of this octet that Rheinberger undertook some twenty years later, is also published in this volume. Rheinberger made major changes from the original octet and headded two new movements to the nonet. Both works show especially the interest and pleasure which he derived from the variety in the differentiation of colors in ensemble playing. The Thema mit Veränderungen op. 93, which until now has been known as a work for string quartet, is published here with the double bass part which Rheinberger later added./ Répertoire / Ensemble de Chambre
