'Klassik für Kinder' wants to introduce clarinet pupils to the beauty of Baroque, Classical and Romantic concert literature. Cautiously, not only original clarinet literature was taken up, but catchy tunes and themes from the opera (The Freeshooter, The Magic Flute and others) and the concert hall (Four Seasons, Capriccio Italy, Reverie and others) were used as well. G.F.Handel's (1685-1759) Sonata In B Flat is well-known to the Oboe repertoire. Therefore when French clarinetist Emile Stievenard arranged the popular piece for the Clarinet it was very well-received. The Sonata In B Flat is made up of four movements; Adagio Allegro Adagio and Allegro. Handel's Sonata In B Flat was first published in 1707-10 for Oboe. Stievenard's editions ensure that the Clarinet part contains the articulation performance directions phrasing and breath marks necessary to the instrument. Composed in 1956 by Bohuslav Martinu the Sonatina for Bb Clarinet and Piano is a neo-classical piece. This work to be played as a single movement has been written in three different sections: Moderato Andante and Poco Allegro. The rhythms are reminiscent of a Polka and a March and the piece contains unexpected syncopation. Being one of Bohuslav Martinu‘s later works it was written in New York after he spent some time in Paris. Bohuslav Martinu (1890-1959) was a Czech composer and a violinist. Even though he was interested in different style including Romanticism Jazz and Expressionism he wrote mainly neo-classical pieces including 16 symphonies 14 ballets and 15 operas.

Chant Slave by Joseph Edouard Barat is a piece for Bb Clarinet and Piano inspired by a Slavic tune. Dedicated to E. Capelle a French musician who won the Paris Conservatory First Prize this piece has can be played by intermediate players (difficulty 4°). This version of the famous piece Le Petit Nègre by Claude Debussy is a version transcribed for Bb Clarinet and Piano by Auguste Périer a professor at the Paris Conservatoire. First published in 1909 the piece in C major starts “Allegro giusto” and is an energetic cakewalk with an introduction followed by the main theme which is repeated before the piece comes to a close. This really charming work would suit an upper-intermediate level or above and is perfect to start working on Debussy’s music.
