Lentini’s Ballad s’inspire du célèbre poème, Amor è un desio che ven da core (L’amour est un désir qui vient du coeur), de Giacomo da Lentini, un des plus éminents poètes de l’École sicilienne du XIIIe siècle. La version instrumentale, signée Jacob de Haan, est absolument superbe. Il existe également une version vocale utilisant le texte original en italien. A short calm introduction leads to the main ballad theme, a gentle waltz melody. The titles can be presented on the programme as separate works but the Universal Band Collection can also be performed as a complete suite. From a didactic point of view it is a suitable work to teach musicians something about the structure in music. For this purpose not only the big structure but also the small structure was kept very clear. Western Girl : A girl from the west of the USA rides her horse across the prairie, dreaming of her future. The rough structure: introduction - theme in a blues scale - the same thing in a different instrumentation - finale. Just a ballad : A balladin pop style with a rough A-B-A form. First there is the introduction of the main theme (A), then follows a tenor melody in minor with a rhythmical reference to the main theme (B). Finally there is the main melody, performed tutti with a different rhythm in the drums (A'). Play the Game : An English saying meaning: play fairly. Playful music in up-tempo with a wink to China, where almost all games are manufactured nowadays. Once again an A-B-A structure here. San Diego : A Mexican fugitive enjoys his freedom in America but also remembers his place of birth with melancholy. A sad minor melody with a straight trendy beat appears twice. The second time it has a slightly different instrumentation, in which the muted trumpets represent the Mexican feeling. Final Dance : Eventually there is a dance with an introduction in renaissance style, followed by a fast dance in rock style. Par DE HAAN JACOB. First Class est une collection qui, comme son nom le suggère, regroupe des publications pour les musiciens débutants. Dans First Class, une attention particulière est apportée au registre de chaque partie afin que le plus grand nombre d’instruments possible puisse jouer les différentes voix. De cette façon, presque toutes les combinaisons instrumentales sont réalisables : du Quatuor à l’Orchestre à Vent avec un effectif complet. Il faut signaler également que toutes les pièces contiennent des parties de percussion ad libitum. Parce qu’ils ont été écrits pour des musiciens débutants, les morceaux de la collection First Class ne font appel à aucune technique de jeu complexe et ne comportent pas de véritables difficultés rythmiques. La partie de direction peut également être utilisée comme une partie d’accompagnement piano ; ce qui permet d’interpréter les pièces avec un instrument solo. Mais, bien sûr, le piano peut également accompagner un duo, un trio, ou même de plus grands ensembles. Les pièces de ce recueil ont été composées par Jacob de Haan. Son titre, In Concert, laisse entendre qu’elles peuvent tout à fait être assemblées pour constituer un programme de concert. Avec des titres mélodieux tels que March Along, Beetle Blues et House Party, c’est un succès assuré ! Rheinfelden Sketches. Par SPARKE PHILIP. In each of the four movements of this major work for concert band, the composer has tried to capture in music something of the spirit of this beautiful Swiss town of Rheinfelden, which lies on the banks of the Rhein. The opening movement, Promenade, sees woodwind and brass alternating short melodic fragments leading to a noble melody from the horns. The dreamy Ballad features a saxophone solo and chorale-like melody. Showdown for Band (Confrontation pour Orchestre) a été spécialement composé pour figurer en tant qu’oeuvre imposée lors de la troisième édition du Concours International de Musique Légère de Saint-Gall (Suisse) en 1998. L’intention du compositeur était de créer une pièce de musique légère qui soit stimulante sur le plan technique pour les différents orchestres en compétition, en particulier sur le plan rythmique. La pièce est divisée en quatre mouvements : Opening, Ballad, Finale et Ending. Les mélodies très plaisantes et l’instrumentation variée révèlent toutes les facettes de l’orchestre dans son ensemble. Le solo dans la partie centralepeut être joué par un saxophone soprano ou alto, ou encore par un bugle.
