The Flute Collection. Par SCHUMANN ROBERT. Remarks in his household books indicate that Robert Schumann (1810–1856) composed the Märchenbilder (Fairy-Tale Pictures) for piano and viola (or violin) op. 113 in just four days between 1st and 4th March, 1851, in Düsseldorf. Schumann only gradually came to the title Märchenbilder. The four pieces are unified by their shared opus number and keys (D minor, F major, D minor, D major), but the first edition published them in two volumes (Vol. 1: Nos. 1 and 2; Vol. 2: Nos. 3 and 4). Clearly, the Märchenbilder op. 113 do not need to be performed as a group but can be played in pairs or individually. The present arrangement is based upon the viola part. The viola's ambitus, when transposed up an octave, matches that of the flute. Solutions from the violin part have also been used on occasion. The double stops in the second piece were, for example, already simplified in the violin version. At such points the violin part provides a model for further simplifications in the flute part. Huilukonsertto. Par ENGLUND EINAR. Einar Englund?s (1916-1999) Flute Concerto (1985) is beyond dispute one of his greatest works. Its finest attributes are its rich melodic invention, colourful instrumentation and immediate message. Add to these its rewarding solo part, and the result is truly one of his best concertos ? and works. He himself did not hesitate to regard it as such. It was premiered in Helsinki on September 16, 1985, having been completed at Ljugarn on the Swedish island of Gotland at the end of June. The Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra was conducted by Leif Segerstam, and the soloist was the concerto?s dedicatee, Mikael Helasvuo. The Flute Concerto opens with a Ritornello in which the flute's playful, dance-like passages make sharp contrast with the orchestra's heroic stance. In the mellow Canzona which follows, the flute plays rhapsodically over repetitive orchestral figures. The work's 'action-packed' finale hints at parody in its military march-like opening, but also gives rein to the lyricism already familiar from the second movement. These Sonatas for flute and harpsichord obbligato (Wq 83 - 86) were written in Potsdam between 1745 and 1755, while C. P. E. Bach was in the service of King Frederick II of Prussia. The sonatas also exist in genuine trio Sonata versions. In our present version, the right hand of the harpsichordist takes over one of the concertante parts. Only when this part rests does the harpsichord fulfill the function of a thoroughbass. This edition was based an the autograph and an copies by Westphal, a friend of the composer. The score reproduces the Urtext, thus maintaining the characteristic features of C. P. E. Bachs writing.
