Barry Tuckwell has had an extensive performing career playing from a young age in the Melbourne andSydney Symphony Orchestra to playing First Horn in the London Symphony Orchestra. Pieces range from C minor to F Major. Composers include Beethoven Cherubini Förster Haydn Mozart Rossini Schumann Strauss Telemann and Von Weber.

Floraison is a terrific 1975 composition by John McCabe from The Goddess Triloigy for Horn in F and Piano accompaniment. Floraison translates as 'flowering' or 'blossoming' and this piece depicts the flower maiden and love goddess Blodeuwedd ('bloom maiden') who is also an owl goddess. She was made up of nine kinds of flowers and in one pagan ritual her husband was sacrificed ascending after death into the skies in the form of an eagle. This composition is cast in the form of a passacaglia in which there are nine variations but perhaps more important than this is the initial image behind the piece which was that of a flower graduallyopening and then closing. This image governs the shape of the music with its increasingly elaborate and intense growth towards its climax and then a return at the close to the opening ideas.

Chant Lointain is a piece for F Horn and Piano by Eugène Bozza. Written for intermediate players this melodious work is divided into three distinct parts: Slow (6/8) Allegro moderato (4/4) and Slow (6/8). Really energetic  Chant Lointain sees the Piano and the Horn answering to each other. The piece lasts a total of four minutes during which the Horn appears as a really majestic instrument. Canto serioso for Horn and Piano-Carl Nielsen's Canto Serioso for Horn in F and Piano. Urtext edition score.The Danish composer Carl Nielsen was one of the most original composers at the turn of the 20th century. Basedon the German Romantic tradition he developed his own musical language especially in his symphonies that are still played very frequently. He also however often turned to chamber music settings.CantoSerioso was originally written as an audition piece for the Copenhagen Opera Orchestra where the position of low Horn player was to be filled. This fairly short work makes the most of the low register and theinstrument’s sonorous mid-range making it a welcome addition to the late Romantic repertoire for Horn.

Urtext. Par SCHUMANN CLARA. Schumann's horn sonatas were composed in 1936/37. Considering the slim repertoire offered horn players from this period, it is more than surprising that these two masterpieces could have slumbered for so long. Both sonatas are similar in structure, with op. 118 being one Schumann's few three-movement sonatas. The first movements of the pieces sparkle with melancholically lyrical melodies, whereas passages strongly marked rhythmically, variously shape the two outer movements. Virtuoso moments can be found, respectively, in the final movements, bringing the works to a brilliant close. The horn parts predominantly range within the full, sonorous middle register, where occasional 'outbursts” up to the notated a flat'' are also not lacking. The clever handling of the balance of sounds, the possibilities on the early valve horn as well as the inner interweaving of themes differentiating horn and piano make the sonatas an exceedingly vivid testimony to Schumann's mature compositional art. for Pianoforte and Horn or Violoncello-Beethoven wrote his Horn Sonata op. 17 for Johann Wenzel one of the most famous horn players of his day. According to an anecdote from Beethoven's pupil Ferdinand Ries he only completed it on the day before the première. Nevertheless the piece was a rousing success.As the horn part demands a masterly technique the publisher of the first print Tranquillo Mollo et Comp. issued the piece in 1801 with an alternative part for violoncello. Since the autograph score has not survived Jonathan Del Mar has based his scholarly-critical edition mainly on this first print.Misha Donat provides an informative Foreword on the work’s history and genesis (Eng/Ger) and theedition is rounded off by a Critical Commentary (Eng) with a complete description of the sources as well as a page in facsimile.
