An Evening in the Village was composed in 1908 as no. 5 of the Ten Easy Piano Pieces. It has become one of Bartók's favorite works, which the composer himself was fond of playing at recitals. As he explained in an American interview, it was ''an original composition that is ... with themes of my own invention but ... the themes are in the style of the Hungarian-Transylvanian folk tunes. There are two themes. The first one is a parlando-rubato-rhythm and the second one is more in a dance-like rhythm. The second one is more or less the imitation of a peasant flute playing.'' Bartók also orchestrated the piece in 1931 as no. 1 of Hungarian Sketches. In 2015 we are launching aseries entitled Bartók Transcriptions for Music Students to mark the 70th anniversary of the composer s death. This involves reissuing our tried publications, and publishing some further, new transcriptions that fulfill in every respect the strict aesthetic demands of the earlier ones. We trust these publications will allow us to introduce still more music students to the realm of one of the great geniuses of 20th-century music. The source of the present edition of the Oboe Concerto in A minor by Antonio Vivaldi is the Collected Works of Vivaldi, edited by Malipiero, published by Ricordi 1955. The title of the original score is Concerto in La minore per oboe, archi e cembalo the original setting: Oboe, Violini I-II, Viole, Violoncelli, Contrabassi and Cembalo. The arrangement for oboe and piano is kept in accurate conformity with the musical text of score, the continuo part - however - has been more freely adapted (of course within the possibilities of baroque style). The piano part contains the entire orchestral material in the Tutti-s, thus the soloist is not obliged to play all the Tutti parts.However, in Movement I and III the first and last Tutti may never be omitted by the performer. Die Grundlage dieser Ausgabe des Oboenkonzertes in A-Moll von Antonio Vivaldi ist die von Malipiero redigierte Gesamtausgabe (Ricordi, 1955). White Light was commissioned by Fumiko Teramoto, oboist with the Musashino Grand Concert Band from Tokyo, Japan. The request was for a moderately slow piece, of intermediate difficulty, which included White in the title, as this is her lucky colour. Composer Philip Sparke decided to use this suggestion to write a piece that was bright and light in terms of harmony and colour, with much use of simple major and minor chords and an emphasis on pure and transparent timbres. He was also keen to capture the essence and history of the oboe as a solo instrument - the piece is pastoral in character and often almost baroque in style. French oboist, organist, teacher and composer, Charles Colin (1832-1881) studied at the Paris Conservatoire where he won many prizes. Colin then went on to lead a successful musical career and his wealth of experience led to the composition of Famous Solos for Competitions, which remain highly regarded to this day. Significantly, the entire compilation of Famous Solos for Competitions was performed 1983 by oboe students at the University of Washington. The first solo, Colin's Opus 33 is challenging for the advanced oboist. The work addresses many technicalities, including complex rhythms, a range of articulation, variations in performance directions, dynamics and time signatures, ornamentation and wide range, among other aspects. For all aspiring, advanced oboe players, Colin's Famous Solos for Competitions is an essential addition to the repertoire, providing excellent audition and competition pieces.

The Moerae was written for Welcher's long-time friend Robert Freeman, director of the Eastman School of Music (1972 to 1996) and Dean of the College of Fine Arts at the University of Texas at Austin (2000 to 2006). Its premiere was given by the Westwood Wind Quintet with Lisa Bergman (piano), who write, The Moerae, with its interesting instrumentation, fascinating story line, and beautiful melodies, is a true work of art. The Moerae are the three fates who spin the thread of life, measure it, and cut it when they please. The Westwood also recorded the work on their Crystal Records CD790, Fate and Fire.
