Danzas is a suite inspired by the music of Latin America. It is a great choice for a Pops or an outdoor concert and is playable by amateur and student ensembles as well as professional orchestras. The work consists of three movements each devoted to the musicalculture of a different country: 1. Argentina 2. Brazil 3. Cuba. It may be performed as a whole or individual movements may be played instead as an opener/ closer.

Poul Ruder's Wind-Drumming for Wind Quintet and 4 Percussionists (1979/85). Parts are for hire: hire@ewh.dk Programme NoteWind-Drumming was written in 1979 on a commission from The Danish Percussion Ensemble.The piece is a clash of two kinds of sound-associations; the mystic exotic impact of Latin-American drumming and the more well dressed reputation of Western concert-instruments in this case a wind-quintet (w. electric flute).The two instrumental camps either melt into one soft humming ritual or are split wide apart the winds tearing their way through the undergrowth ofrainforest-drumming. There is more than one way of getting on to WIND-DRUMMING: obviously it is about the confrontation of two incongruent ways of living a lament on the damage done to the tropical rainforests of the world by modern civilisation. One can hear it plainly as a direct rhythm-show a downright number or a joyous homage to the most exiting kind of folkloristic music at all: the carnal spell of the Brazilian Samba. Poul Ruders

Symphony No. 8 for Orchestra (2011) by Per Nørgård. Premiered on September 19 2013 by the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra and John Storgårds. Programme note:  The first movement opens with sculptural rising and falling scales. Visually the sound may call to mind say spirals or ziggurats (temple towers). Brisk music leads to the climax of the movement.  The second movement is slow and sensually melodious and has three interludes of greater timbral melodic action.  The third movement begins very restlessly but towards the climax thetempo gradually begins to accelerate. An oscillating pianissimo murmur ends the movement – and the symphony.  Symphony no. 8 is commissioned by Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra and is besides the Orchestra dedicated to the conductor John Storgårds.  Per Nørgård (2012)   

The harmonic model for this piece is based on a subdivision of pitches in primary and secondary notes in principle any chord can be viewed from it's structural qualities including interval content and symmetry but it might also be conceived from a more acoustical point of view.The parallel basis for this work is a sequence of 12-tone chords repeated as a chaconne every chord has it's Alter-Ego an overtone series the fundamentals of which together form a bass line. By articulating the cycle differently with always varied diagonal paths between two layers Lindberg has aimed to give the music some direction despite it's vague repetitive structure.Workfor Orchestra premiered at the Queen Elizabeth Hall London by the London Sinfonietta under the direction of Esa-Pekka Salonen April 1990.

The Christmas cantata Gloria in excelsis Deo BWV 191, which has always presented researchers with many challenging problems, is among the few works to Latin words set by Johann Sebastian Bach. Par CANAT DE CHIZY EDITH. Alio signifie en latin 'ailleurs'. Un mot qui résume l'essentiel du projet de cette pièce. Par un jeu des timbres et l'extraordinaire potentiel qu'offrent les instruments de l'orchestre, j'ai en effet tenté d'évoquer cet 'ailleurs', cet autre monde où vont peut-être ceux qui nous ont quittés. Ce désir d'appréhender quelque peu ce qui nous dépasse est devenu une obsession qui sous-tend ma musique comme une vague incessante. C'est aussi à la manière d'un ressac qu'évolue cette partition, allant du statique à une extrême mouvance, puis s'éteignant dans le calme après une série de ruptures. Par TYSHAWN SOREY. Tyshawn Sorey\'s For George Lewis draws inspiration from The Will to Adorn, a dense work for chamber orchestra by the composers friend, collaborator and mentor George Lewis. Where Lewis\'s score is frenetic, however, Sorey\'s enters into a meditative stasis for most of its 51-minute duration, slowly accumulating and breaking down different sonorities of harmony and colour. Alarm Will Sound, for whom the piece was composed, gave the world premiere in November 2019 at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, conducted by Alan Pierson, who also worked closely with the composer to edit this score. Oper In Drei Bildern-This masterpiece composed by Erich Wolfgang Korngold when he was only 23 was one of the great stage successes of the 1920s and 30s before being removed from theatre schedules by the National Socialists. Rediscovered in the 1970s it has enjoyed continuing popularity ever since. The libretto was compiled by the composer?s father the music critic Julius Korngold writing under the pseudonym ?Paul Schott? a combination of the name of the protagonist and the publishing house. A vivacious theatre group comes to liven up the gloomy city of Bruges (here a symbol of death) and the widower Paul is forced to decide between the past and the present.Korngold was fascinated by this symbolic plot and created an iridescent orchestral score washed in vivid colours. A variety of operatic devices are intermingled as if viewed through a kaleidoscope: opulent melodic arias advanced harmonies psychoanalytic profundity and cinematic transitions oscillating between reality and dream worlds guarantee the continuing modernity of this work up to the present day.

Lorsque Frank Madlener m'a proposé le projet de confronter un orchestre symphonique avec la lutherie électronique, j'ai tout de suite accepté ce défi sachant qu'il me faudrait rapidement fixer des contraintes très fortes, tant le champ des possibles, qu'il soit instrumental ou électroacoustique, était infini. Mon idée initiale était d'utiliser pour la première fois des transformations en temps réel, afin d'assouplir les rapports de verticalité et d'utiliser l'informatique comme un moyen d'orchestration. Celle de Frank était de se demander comment l'électronique pouvait créer l'illusion d'un orchestre déployé dans l'espace, entourant le public, et créant des configurations acoustiques inouïes. Afin de travailler sur cette problématique, j'ai décidé d'utiliser une formation orchestrale défective, ou certains instruments (notamment ceux qui étaient les moins localisables à l'écoute, comme le basson ou le cor) seraient absents et 'remplacés' dans la texture générale par l'ordinateur. Qui dit 'illusion' dit aussi 'surprise', et j'avais besoin, pour élaborer la forme de l'oeuvre, de prendre comme point de départ une source qui ait à la fois une grande diversité interne (une succession d'instants pourraient être traduits musicalement par autant de configurations acoustiques) et une cohérence. Rapidement, il m'est apparu que mes recherches étaient finalement très similaires à celles de l'immense chef espagnol Ferran Adrià, dont la cuisine joue en permanence sur le conflit entre connu et inconnu, entre référence et invention abstraite, et dont les menus sont 'composés' avec un sens de la forme absolument saisissant. Très régulièrement, je tente d'établir des liens entre la musique et les arts de la bouche (gastronomie, oenologie), par l'improvisation au piano sur des vins ou des mets, et par l'écriture (notamment d'un duo pour alto et piano, Quelques effervescences, qui s'inspire de vins pétillants du monde). Les deux univers me semblent intimement liés, dans l'immédiateté de la réception, et dans le parallélisme entre les sensations éprouvées (de nombreux musiciens font appel à des métaphores gustatives pour parler de leur travail : un accord 'épicé', une sonorité 'grasse', une orchestration 'acide'...). Le menu que j'ai eu l'honneur de déguster en 2007 au restaurant 'El Bulli' s'articulait autour de 35 plats que j'ai utilisés chronologiquement, tant l'articulation entre le salé et le sucré, les mets marins et terriens, le végétal et l'animal était, en soi, une dramaturgie parfaite. L'illusion était présente dès le premier instant. Ainsi, 'l'olive sphérique' qui débutait ce repas jouait sur le contraste entre un objet visuellement identifiable (une olive) et son 'interprétation' surprenante (il s'agissait en fait d'une reconstruction visuelle de l'olive, mais qui n'était autre que de l'huile d'olive emprisonnée dans une fine couche gélatineuse verte : aspect et goût étaient en phase, mais la texture, elle, était inouïe). Musicalement, la traduction de ce plat était assez évidente : un impact reprenant l'explosion de cet met en bouche débute la pièce, et une texture plus continue vient évoquer le déploiement de l'huile dans la bouche. Certains plats sont assez unitaires, d'autres contiennent en eux un parcours que j'ai fidèlement reproduit (par exemple la 'framboise au wasabi', qui se déguste en trois temps successifs). J'ai aussi mis en relation certains plats entre eux, afin de créer des 'retours' qui permettent à la structure musicale de sortir d'une logique de catalogue (par exemple, une fleur de capucine, dégustée avant les desserts, renvoie gustativement, et donc musicalement, à une amande fraîche qui, elle, est présente dans le premier quart du repas). Ce 'livre' s'achève sur la texture aérienne d'un papier effervescent au cassis qui conclut de façon suspensive une pièce particulièrement animée, où les masses sonores s'opposent de façon frontale, et viennent occuper tout l'espace de la salle de concert. Commande de l'Orchestre de Paris et de l'Ircam, le Livre des illusions (hommage à Ferran Adrià) est dédié à Marie Linden et Grégoire Biasini.
