Op. 14. Par ELGAR EDWARD. With his Vesper Voluntaries, Edward Elgar composed a wealth of organ pieces for performance in church services and concerts. The wonderful miniatures, composed in song form, two to three minutes in length, can be performed individually or as a complete cycle. They are of moderate difficulty and intended for manuals, but they can optionally also be played with pedal. This Urtext edition is based on the first printed edition edited by Elgar himself, which has been carefully checked through. Le oeuvre globale de Johanna Senfter comprend seulement trois oeuvres pour orgue gratuit: ' Fantasie und Fuge ' op 30 bis (en : compositeurs féminins, ED 9741), les variations présentes ' Morgenglanz der Ewigkeit ' opus 66 et une pièce de l'orgue en ré mineur sans numéro d'opus. Avec les trois cycles de chorale preludes op 30 b, opus 70 (Schott ED 9603) et op. 73, l'instrument de l'orgue occupe une partie assez faible dans son oeuvre. Qui met le point de vue évidente, à savoir pour voir le compositeur tel un ' chorale Fantasia ' principalement comme un étudiant de Reger, en perspective. Il convient, au contraire, de faire connaître cette oeuvre majeure comme une facette de la longue durée de vie d'un artiste dont les oeuvres principales encore attendent à redécouvrir. / Orgue

Par WIDOR CHARLES-MARIE. Charles-Marie Widor 's Symphonies for Organ, Op. 42 No. 2. Charles-Marie Widor (b. Lyons 1844, d. Paris 1937) first began his studies in his hometown, but later pursued them in Brussels, taking lessons with Nicolas-Jacques Lemmens on the Organ, and composition lessons with François-Joseph Fetis. In 1868, he inaugurated the Organ at Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. He also deputized for Saint-Saë ns at the Organ of La Madeleine, and then in 1870 he was provisionally nominated organist at Saint-Sulpice. It was not until 1933 that he relinquished this post in favour of his pupil Marcel Dupre. Followingthe death of Cesar Franck in 1890, it was Widor who was requested to direct Organ studies at the Paris Conservatoire, and he followed this by taking charge of the composition class in 1896. Among his very many students were figures such as Louis Vierne and Charles Tournemire. Widor was a founder member of the Casa Velasquez in Madrid and the American Conservatoire in Fontainbleu. He was an exceptional virtuoso who could be heard in concerts in France and throughout the whole world. He left numerous works, but it is above all his Organ music that is most performed today./ Répertoire / Orgue

Second Set, Op 105. Par STANFORD CHARLES VILLIERS. Short Preludes and Postludes Set 2 Op. 105 is a wonderful collection by important and influential British composer Charles Villiers Stanford. He started a renaissance of British music styles, composed prolifically and, perhaps more importantly and lastingly, he was the mentor to some of the most revered of 20th Century British composers such; as Bridge, Holst, Vaughan Williams and Butterworth. Including a number of pieces based on themes by Orlando Gibbons, this 1908 work for Maunals and Pedals is a superb addition to any organist's repertoire./ Répertoire / Orgue

Les transcriptions pour orgue proposées ici ne sont pas fortuites, Du Mont lui-même en est l’instigateur, par le simple fait qu’il mentionne sans équivoque, dans la préface de ses Meslanges imprimés en 1657 : « (...) On trouvera outre lesdites pièces, plusieurs Preludes en façon d’Allemandes à deux parties, pour la Basse et le Dessus de Violle, lesquelles se pourront se jouer seules ou avec la Basse-continue si l’on veut (...). Ces Preludes serviront aussi pour les Dames Religieuses qui touchent l’Orgue en façon de Duo : j’ay marqué ceux qui sont propres pour l’Orgue, ils n’auront qu’à les transcrire pour les jouer avec plus de facilité. » Mais, il était tentant de ne pas se cantonner à cette indication, et ce recueil propose l’intégralité des 20 Preludes. En 1661, Du Mont fait paraître un livret contenant une « Troisième partie ajoutées aux Preludes des Meslanges, pour un Dessus ou une Taille de Viole ». Il précise : « pour faire plus grande harmonie ». Ces préludes, en trios, ont été transcrits ici sous cette forme. Dans le recueil des Cantica sacra paru en 1652, on trouve cinq pièces instrumentales indépendantes, Ces pièces, notées pour trois ou quatre violes et basse continue, ouvrent cet ouvrage. Olivier Miquel ? Henri Du Mont : né en 1610 dans le diocèse de Liège, Henry Du Mont étudie la musique à Maastricht, où il devient organiste à l’âge de 19 ans. Les troubles politiques de cette région convainquent certainement Du Mont de tenter sa chance à Paris. Il y arrive dès 1638, sous le règne de Louis XIII, et on le retrouve, en 1643, titulaire de l’orgue de l’église Saint-Paul dans le Marais (église détruite à la Révolution), poste qu’il honorera jusqu’à sa mort en 1684./ Recueil / Orgue

In 1739 Bach's Third Part of the Clavier Übung was published on 80 pages closely printed. Ever since then the collection has been regarded as a high point in the history of organ composition as it offers an impressive cross section of Bach's artistry.This present volume is an updated edition of Volume 4, Series IV, of the New Bach Edition, presented by Manfred Tessmer in 1969. A fully revised edition proved unnecessary, as there were relatively few corrections affecting the musical text. However, the volume now includes a detailed Preface by Christoph Wolff which discusses not only the work's genesis but also offers an up-to-date description of the sources. For the new engraving of the musical text page-turns were reviewed and improved.Bach's autograph is considered lost and so the main source is the original print of the collection from 1739. In collaboration with the Leipzig Bach Archive and its database Bach digital this new edition includes links to two important copies of the original print which contain hand-written entries by Bach himself.Any complete scholarly-critical edition of the works of Johann Sebastian Bach must, in the interest of its use by researchers and performers, incorporate intervening new discoveries wherever possible. With this in mind, Bärenreiter has entered an agreement with the Leipzig Bach Archive to reissue particular volumes as applicable, either in updated performing editions based on the New Bach Edition or in thoroughly revised editions based on the New Bach Edition - revised. Pendant son séjour à Weimar (1848-1861), Liszt a développé un style entièrement nouveau, puis d'organes qui se distingue par des éléments à la fois l'orchestre et pianistique. En collaboration avec le maître de chapelle Gottschalg Alexander Wilhelm (1827-1908) à partir Tiefurt, il a régulièrement lancé ce qu'on appelle des conférences d'organes '. Et c'était à la suggestion de GOTTSCHALG que l'arrangement actuel de la chorale de Saint-Jacques de 'Tannhäuser' l'opéra a été écrit. Avec sa version pour orgue, Liszt, par le biais de cet exemple, a jeté les bases pour la tradition (pas toujours incontestée), s'étendant à l'heure actuelle, de l'orgue des transcriptions des opéras de Wagner. Des organistique des éléments de la Pilgrims 'Choir sont le thème de choral classique, le solennel 'sacré' de l'atmosphère solennelle le tempo ainsi que la cantability expressive. Par JOHANNSEN KAY. 'The Great Wall? developed out of an improvisation, a homage to the Great Wall of China. Two motifs dominate in the work, which requires a three-manual organ: a two-measure ostinato in the pedal, and an oriental-sounding melody found on the manuals, in the basic shape and in the variations. The music leads seamlessly from an atmospheric picture into a rhythmically-driven crescendo, is interrupted by a 'storm? fantasy before ending, after a second upsurge, in a radiant fortissimo. The dynamics and articulation are given very precisely in the score. The registration markings relate to the four-manual Mühleisen organ in the Stiftskirche Stuttgart, and are intended as a guide for performance. This thrilling work, which recalls Ravel's 'Bolero? at certain moments, communicates directly with a wide range of audiences./ Répertoire / Orgue
