This is effectively a work in three movements - Allegro Andante cantabile and Presto - which Davies likens to 'three obstacle courses bristling with technical difficulties'. However as he goes on to say 'young people arenaturally gifted with extraordinary rhythmic skills which normally remain untapped'. Given the opportunity older children have here the material for a highly arresting piece of music-making. Scoring also includes a small woodblock a small temple block and a small suspended cymbal. The xylophones are one each of the following: concert soprano alto and bass. The two glockenspiels are soprano and alto and the metallophones are bass and deep bass (avibraphone may be used instead of the latter). These studies will provide a challenge to all percussionists for whom there is a distinct shortage of suitable studies. Duration c. 5mins.

The Spiders' Revenge is a short music-theatre work (duration about 25 minutes) designed for performance by primary school children. The work was written for Evie Primary School a small rural school in Orkney of about 60 pupils between the ages of five and eleven and was specially devised to enhance an environmental studies project on 'mini-beasts'. All the pupils in the school took part in the first performance. Two children playing in a garden delight in tormenting ladybirds snails spiders and other living creatures who they claim 'have no right to be'. The spiders teach the children a salutary lesson during the course of which they learn a great deal aboutthe ways of these creatures finally recognizing the wonder of the insect world and acknowledging that all 'have their place on the earth'.The songs include simple recorder and percussion parts and guitar chords. Towards Completion: Fire over Water (hexagram no. 64) I Ching (The Book of Changes) four movements for solo percussion was written in 1982 and dedicated to the Danish percussionist Gert Mortensen. I Ching is the thousand-year-old Chinese oracle book whose 64 combinations of six 'Yang' or 'Yin' lines (bright or dark) represent 64 different states of being for all living things includinghuman beings. The 64 states of being should be thought of as an eternal hidden cycle which lies behind everything that we do: for example the supreme the enthusiastic initiative (combination or 'hexagram' no. 1 the creative) or the despair of the moment the warm and friendly and so on. The states of being exist on all levels - the official the private etc. - at the same time in many speeds. From these I selected four the sequence of which progresses from a situation from which there is apparently no solution to a (temporary) relief. In the first movement ´Thunder repeated the Image of Shock´ a vicious circle of claustrophobic closed circuits is represented by the tom-tom part. This is followed by tam-tams and wood sounds but returns full-circle to the tom-toms. The second movement ´The taming Power of the small´has its origins in the violence of the first movement but this time lets it resolve in a long glide upwards which stars with voice sounds ´borrowed´from the Beatles´´Revolution no 9´which are then transmitted to the other instruments. The third movement is ´The Gentle The Penetrating´in which lyrical poetry dominates with gentle bell-like sounds and delicate tunes. The Concerto For Percussion (Op. 73) was written specially for Philips Records in 1968 and first appeared on a record issued in 1969. It has since been used several times as ballet music. It is scored for fourunaccompanied Percussion instruments with a set of parts available here. The conductor and composer Leonard Salzedo (1921-2000) was born in London and studied at the Royal College of Music with Herbert Howells. Aswell as conducting a wide range of Ballet companies he also wrote the music for several Ballets and Film scores but he is probably best remembered for his chamber music.

These formulas used inthe fast growing field of 'Chaos theory' are relatively simple but they generate fascinating and surprisingly 'organic' patterns when shown graphically on a computer screen or played as music. One should think that such amathematical approach would lead to sterile and 'theoretical' music. The sound world of 'Stonewave' however is not one you would associate with math books. The steady insistent pulse and the use of sequences put squarely upagainst each other or divided by long rests suggest an invisible ritual. A ritual for what? Well then let it be a ritual for the exorcism of some 'evil spirits' which now ride our part of the world under the name ofLiberalism making people the servants of the Market Forces instead of vice versa.'Stonewave' is therefore an incantation as it seems that only divine forces can save European culture from a political system that proclaimsthe Jungle Law as the guiding principle in social and cultural life.
