Par CHOPIN FREDERIC. Les musiques de Nuit instrumentales du XVIIIe siècle, destinées à être jouées en plein air, sont à l'origine du Nocturne. Mozart et Haydn ont composé des 'Notturni' pour divers ensembles. Cependant, John Field est considéré comme le créateur du Nocturne pour piano. Chopin le tenait en grande estime et faisait souvent travailler à ses élèves les Nocturnes de ce pianiste et compositeur irlandais au même titre que les siens pour qu'ils se familiarisent avec le 'legato' et qu'ils acquièrent un beau son. Frédéric Chopin compose 21 Nocturnes. L'année de composition de chaque Nocturne ne peut pas toujours être certifiée avec précision mais celle de leur publication est une référence exacte. Trois Nocturnes ont été édités après sa mort. Chopin a l'âme romantique et la musique de ses Nocturnes en exprime les états. L'ambiance crépusculaire est en effet propice aux tendres épanchements, à la mélancolie, aux improvisations poétiques et musicales, comme le dialogue de la Muse et du Poète dans la Nuit de Mai d'Alfred de Musset. Tout en conservant une forme classique (forme Lied A.B.A. généralement), Chopin s'éloigne de la romance et sublimise le Nocturne par son inspiration et son sens pianistique: la mélodie, influencée par le 'bel canto' italien est plus ample et se développe en variations ornementales expressives, souvent chromatiques - l'harmonie est plus raffinée et plus audacieuse par ses dissonances et les dessins d'accompagnement de la basse en forme d'arpèges ou d'accords brisés sont plus ingénieux. It has often struck me as intriguing that The Fitzwilliam Virginal Book (a collection of keyboard music spanning the period c.1562-1612) occupies a virtually non-existent place in the literature considered viable by pianists.Needless to say harpsichordists continue to hold the music in the highest esteem while a number of transcriptions for instruments and ensembles have been made available in more recent times. How can it be that this ancient heritage - which in keyboard music terms might be regarded as the equivalent to the Dead Sea Scrolls - has hitherto seemed a no-go area for pianists? It is as if the first 'proper' keyboard music tumbledmiraculously out of some parallel universe around Bach's time i.e. the first half of the 18th century. While our modern piano is perhaps as different from a virginal as a washing machine is from a mangle there are in fact a good many facets of virginal music which read across perfectly well to today's instruments. For this to be possible we need to take the time to lookbeyond peculiarities in translation which to a significant extent comes down to issues resulting from burgeoning notational practices. It also becomes necessary to re-imagine the music in light of what is possible as well as what is desirable. Problems with accessing the sound-world of pre-Baroque keyboard music can be overcome quite easily just as it is possible to become better in resonance withavant garde musical styles given appropriate immersion. Since the writing of the performance notes to The Fitzwilliam Virginal Book more than a century ago (by J.A. Fuller Maitland and W. Barclay Squire) the momentum generated by the Early Music Revival has brought about immeasurable insights into the intentions of Renaissance and Baroque composers. Performances on periodinstruments continue to reacquaint us with a bygone age and stimulate a healthy fascination for the practices that were once fundamental to the craft. Hugh Wood's Ballade Op.57 for Piano was commissioned by BBC Radio 3 and first performed by Joanna MacGregor on 7th June 2012 at the Guildhall Bath as part of the Bath International Music Festival.'The music of Chopinis a revelation which came disgracefully late in my life. To admire is one thing; to try to emulate is quite another: and all that I have borrowed here is a title. Perhaps memories of Joanna MacGregor performing the FourthBallade very beautifully long ago played a part in the naming. But to define what a Ballade should or should not be is quite beyond me: after all Chopin and Brahms both came to quite different conclusions. I just like theold rather poetic word.A fanfarish beginning ends in a falling arpeggionic cascade which will recur in varied form at turning points throughout the piece. A major third emerges to become the accompaniment to the mainlyrical melody which becomes more and more decorated until it ends with a second cascade. The tune resumes more urgently against an undulating semiquaver accompaniment. A bigger climax suddenly gives way to a reminiscence of oneof the opening figures and then introduces alla recit. a new motif. But immediately the main melody continues this time getting gradually calmer quieter and sweeter until the new motif takes over in a passage of 6 and ismore fully worked out.From very high up the opening fanfares are heard in the distance and a faster tempo brings a more vigorous passage culminating in the biggest and most climactic of the cascades. This might be theend of the piece but it is not. A sequence of soft velvety chords rises up eventually to reveal the original major third. Four phrases of the opening melody are then heard over it in their plainest form.' - H.W.

This edition presents the Piano sonatas that originated between 1924 and 1927.Michael Kube has edited this first ever scholarly-critical edition on the basis of the prints published in Schulhoff?s lifetime and compared these with the surviving handwritten sources. Not only have errors been corrected but peculiarities ofSchulhoff?s notation have also been reconstructed. The principal source for Sonata No. 3 was the composer?s autograph fair copy.Erwin Schulhoff was a German-speaking composer who was born in Prague in 1894 but returned to his native Prague in the 1920s to teach at the local conservatory. He died in the Nazi concentration camp in Wülzburg (Bavaria) in 1942.
