Gustav Holst has earned a place among the most revered of late 19th and early 20th century composers and is best known for his enduring Orchestral suite The Planets.But before that great work in his use of Englsh folksongs Gnostic texts and these Vedic hymns one can discern Holst’s search for a compositional Voice beyond the constraints of the European canon in the early 1900’s. Some see composition of the Vedic Hymns as a turning point in Holst’scompositional life. The quality is not completely consistent and Holst remained true to his Western musical inheritance for the most part in setting them but as art songs they are deeply felt and moving to hear.The nine songsare scored for mezzo-Soprano or baritone Voice. The texts are taken from the Rigveda one of the four sacred texts of Hinduism and the oldest religious text in the world.The first set of three comprises Ushas Varuna and Maruts or Dawn Sky and Stormclouds respectively. This collection of Vocalises contains 45 vocal exercises devised by innovative teacher Gabriel Fauré. When Gabriel Fauré was appointed Director of the Paris Conservatoire in 1905 one of his most pressing concerns – and first achievements – was a complete reform of the teaching of singing. He was determined to introduce mandatory study of art song along with 'exercises developing vocal suppleness articulation and voice placement and production which are the basis of singing teaching'. To this end between 1906 and 1916 he composed a substantial body of accompanied vocalises for use in theConservatoire’s sight-singing examinations. For a century these vocalises – all but one now held in the Archives nationales de France in Paris – have lain unknown to the musical world at large. Their first publication here marks a major event for the vocal teaching repertoire (as well as some entrancing music); a marvellous resource of skilfully devised vocal exercises ranging from elementary to advanced virtuoso level all from one of history’s greatest song composers.

Collected Songs Vol. 2 - Songs to Danish and Norwegian texts (1906-15) by Rued Langgaard for Voice and Piano. Critical edition by Ole Ugilt Jensen and Bendt Viinholt Nielsen. Rued Langgaard (1893-1952) is one of the most important Danish composers of the 20th century. He has however only acquired this status many years after his death. Langgaard was an eminent musical talent but with his romantic and symbolist view of art he ended up as an outsider in an era when the trend-setting musical life of the time was permeated by Carl Nielsen's sober and modern attitude. Rued Langgaard's production within the lied genre comprises125 songs. Half of them were composed in the short span of years between 1914 and 1918 when the composer was in his early twenties.With this publication in three volumes Langgaard's important and personal contribution to the genre is presented in its entire range. Only 27 of the songs have previously been published. The songs are set to German Danish and Norwegian poems. The poems in Danish and Norwegian are included in an English translation (though not designed for performance purposes). Each volume is accompanied by an introduction source descriptions and a critical apparatus in Danish and English. The Rued Langgaard Edition (RLU) was established in 2000 the aim being to present practical performance-oriented publications of Langgaard's works on a critical scholarly basis.
