Countertenor Voice-Four Traditional Songs is a setting of four heartbreaking and poignant folk songs by virtuoso contemporary composer Nico Muhly. Composed in 2011 the songs deal with themes of death murder and unimaginable events that are emotively arranged for Countertenor Voice and Piano. Commissioned by Carnegie Hall in New York City and Wigmore Hall in London this work was first performed at those renowned venues in 2011 and 2012 respectively. Muhly states that he drew inspiration from old English folksongs and would spend time imagining stylised yet subtle musical settings with accompaniments. The result of this intensiveperiod of listening is Four Traditional Songs which lasts around 15 minutes and carries that incredible sense of sad balladry that counters the occasionally jaunty melodies. We are delighted to announce publication of three very special song cycles by Timothy Bowers. The last words of famous people whether real or invented exert a strange fascination. Breaking with the tradition that a song cycle is a setting of poetry Timothy Bowers has chosen the last words of fourteen famous (in one case infamous) characters from history and two comic/ironic epitaphs by Byron as his texts. Each collection provides a short (c 7’) concert work with settings ranging from fifteen seconds to five minutes duration.Book 2 is for tenor and piano and traverses the widest emotional range within one volume. The poignant last words of a King a President a greatwriter and an heroic explorer sit beside the vengeful rantings of a prisoner sent for execution.

In 1918-19 Gian Francesco Malipiero wrote a collection of seven songs commonly known as Sette Canzoni. They were initially intended as a stand-alone work but became incredibly popular when they wereincluded as the second act of the composer’s opera L’Orfiede. However in recent years the collection has come to be recognised in its own right as one of the composer’s masterpieces.Like all of the seven songs the fifth Serenata is designed as an individual mini-opera. Scored for a solo Tenor with Piano accompaniment it tells the story of a young lover serenading his beloved. At the same time unknown to him shesits inside lamenting the death of a relative.Serenata has been translated from the original Italian into French by Henry Prunières and into English by Edwin Evans.

POD-I'm Only Sixteen! is a work by Nico Muhly taken from his opera 'Two Boys' commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera. Scored for Tenor and Piano Accompaniment the piece lasts around 3 minutes.
